Testarossa vs. 348

Yesterday I was in Monza for the 2nd race (out of 8) of the Trofeo Ferrari wich we organized within some of the member of the FCI.
With my 348 Spider I overtook 2 TRs started 20 and 30 secs before me, even though Monza is one of the fastest circuit in Europe and bigger power should take some advanteg. Note, I'm not a super driver.
Thus, to have fan, no doubt, 348.
As shape, no doubt TR is one of the top Ferrari ever.
Must be awesome to drive Monza. Next time you'll need to strap a camera to your car so you can share with us.

How do you check the valves besides opening up the engine combustion chamber. And how much would cambelts replacements including labor be. Or , how easy is it to replace the cambelts, can a non-ferrari mechanic do it, or a self-doer kinda owner.
I heard about leaks in the manifold, is it really that distinct for you notice a leak or a problem with the manifolds.

I am just trying to get an insight in preparation for my future (within a year) purchase of a F355 spider.

BTW

is it spelled spider or spyder

To replace the cambelts (properly) you need to pull the engine. Total cost is $3000-5000 depending on what else needs to be done. It is not really a job that a home mechanic can do. On the manifolds, you can hear it when they go. You can also also feel the exhaust escaping over the top of the engine.

It was my strongest complain not to have a camera, even because I still have in mind the incredible feeling but I have nothing to review.
I am looking for a system to link the camera (in a safe way!) to the car, taking in mind that in a spider it's not easy. I'm prepared to drive with hood closed (sob) but even in this configuration I didn'y find a suitable solution. Any sugestion? On June 16 and 17 I could test the system, if any, at Vallelunga (near to Rome)

Thanks Boxer. I did speak to the local ferrari shop here in jersey and they did say that the engine has to be pulled for a cambelt replacement. They estimated roughly $7-8K for it.

Sorry to say this< used to love the TR even though in person is seems a bit toooo wide, but impressive in person.

The 348, has a good speed ratio for weight and cornering is GREAT. TR isn't the best example of a 12 cylinder IMO compared to later models. Prices reflecting such. BUT the 348 IS costly to maintain and that brings it almost in line with the TR costs.

TOUGH decision......12's are AWSOME: no doubt...ya' have an true beast there.

8's good for cornering.

oh, well....buy both.

I went to a regional FOC meet at Graypaul Nottingham last night, and got talking to a chap who had a 87 TR, I had a good look around it. The dash and interior looks very square and dated now, but when he fired it up, the sound of the flat 12 was something else, you just can't get that with an 8 cylinder. I want one now, but at 7 foot wide it probably isn't practical in Uk city driving and on country roads. The 348 is a nice looking car, better than the TR, but I'd still have the TR for the noise.

I've just found on Youtube the video of my friend Claudio at Monza (search for "F430 Monza Prima manche trofeo FCI"). It is not from my car, but you can have a look to the track (2 chicanes added for safety) and to my car for a while: Claudio overtook me at the chicane after the Variante Ascari.
He won the F430 contest.

Those setups are pretty good. I have two cameras like that with the same sony lens. However, I would never recommend this be the only camera you use because it won't auto adjust for light the way a larger camera will. Generally these can be used for the impossible shots. For a great example of mixing the cameras up see this video:

Most the exterior shots are with the above "lip-stick" camera but the problem is the sound sucks.

I have both and would not trade either one. Both are different but alike too. I must say that the 348 handles better but the TR is faster and sound better.
Very nice looking set. I would be very interested in a comparision between the two coming from and expert/owner.

I think the 512TR is an actually reliable car. (Even though I took mine apart). The 512TR is an attention getter and fun straight line, but I double think the twisties. I love the 512TR and always wanted one. I would say that from a gawk factor the TR doesn't attract much attention compared to my Diablo. The 348 s a nice car, but I would have to say the 512TR. I do however think the V-8 sound with the right headers and exhaust...sounds awesome. V-12 sounds good, but it's more of a truck sound to me than anything else....but I still love the 12. Obviously I am bias and you all can see what my choice o Ferrari was.

I looked at both before I purchaced my first fcar. The testarossa was (and is) one of my favorite cars. With that said, driving both I thought the 348 was a much better driver, handles better, love the open top (94 spider) and now that I put the capristo level 3 exhaust on, sounds better. One more thing, I didn't fit in the testarossa, so that may have swayed me a bit also towards the 348

Was the fit in the TR a height problem ?
