Since 1st July 2007 the tax is about 30% of the car, including VAT.
Then, you also have an annual tax of circulation that varies with the engine capacity and the amount of CO2.
For example, for my Mondial, tha annual circulation tax would be 600 Euros (900 dollars) if it was registered after that date. Because it was really registered in 2004 I only pay 64 Euros.
What a difference...
Now it´s almost impossible to buy a high capacity car in Portugal.

I love shooting these numbers over the Americans when they complain about govt. and environmental concerns: USA has it easy by a compare. Unless one is in CA, which BTW, I am proud to say: We get it and are trying to make it correct too.

Grannuci,

And what about the fuel? Can you imagine the price of the gasoline here?
Well, one liter is now 1.3 Euros, so a gallon is 5.2 Euros, or 7.6 Dollars!
Because in Spain the liter is less than one Euro normally I drive 50 miles to fill up the tank and save a lot of money.
The portuguese gas stations close the spanish border are all shut down. Smart government we have...

Govt.: Forever beeing one-smarter than the average ;)

When they changed the tax schedule in July 2007 they also eliminated the exemption for cars 30 years or older. You used to be able to bring them in without paying registration tax. Under the new system no one will import a classic car.

Gents,
Just to make you feel a bit better - here's how its done in Ireland. Lets take a new car purchased for a net €100,000 abroad and imported into my fine country....

Price: €100,000
VAT (21%): €21,000
VRT (36% of total market price incl the VRT!!): €approx 50,000
Total price: €171,000

Annual road tax: €2,000
Price of petrol: €1.20 p/litre

Now these figures are approx and refer to a supercar (or anything with v. high CO2 emissions). Still doesn't take long to work out why there aren't too many Ferrari's floating around Ireland - and less still since our economy went belly up.
