I have a question about 308 rear end styling. My 308 (and most 308s I have seen) have a big black vented box around the exhaust, but I like the way the exhaust looks in this picture. The whole black box seems to be unnecessary. What is that called? Is that an after-market modification?

It's called the muffler grille. Stock on all US models. If you don't like the way it looks, take it off. Just make sure you keep it. :)

Rear End Treatment

I think this is a Euro 308. I know of one here in Phoenix, and that's how the exhaust system came on that one. Also notice the indent for a wide license plate. The side marker lights are U.S., so maybe this one was a Euro car brought over and made EPA and DOT legal. Any other guesses? -Steve

Pete04222 - So you are saying if I take off the muffler grill it will look like this? That seems unlikely to me.

Ferrari328GT - I never noticed there were different indents. I did a quick search online and every 308 I saw had the indent for a wide license plate. Does that always indicate a Euro car? The car in this picture does not have the Euro style front end.

License Plate

You are correct, GeoMetry! I just took a look at my 328, and it, too, has a wide indent. I still think it's a Euro model, though, based on the exhaust configuration. Next time I see my friend with the silver Euro 308, I'll confirm. -Steve

To my understanding, the black vented rear valance on US cars is on the cars with catalysts. IIRC, the early (1976-77) US cars don't have cats or the valance.

The two catalysts on the US cars take up a lot of space, necessitating more room. If you remove yours, you will have a somewhat unsightly muffler visible. If you buy a Euro-spec exhaust system, it will look better with the pan removed.

The car in the photo could also be a U.S.-spec car with a European exhaust and rear end treatment, possibly. All steel 308s seem to have the same rear fascia stamping that is both tall enough for U.S. plates and wide enough for European plates. :)

Attached are examples of the different treatments taken from Keith Bluemel's Original Ferrari V8.
