DJ,
a couple of days every winter the temperature drops below 40*F and I panic and check the antifreeze in my cars and spread some salt on the driveway 8)
that's about 4-5°C

mine, you are lucky then
at the moment if it TOPS 13°C here, then we are lucky, at the moment it's 0°C outside

Never too hot, never too cold. Just right.
Only advice would be to use a known premium brand (Castrol, Shell, Agip) and to get the concentration level right for you climate.

It's not just antifreeze, it is coolant. Not only does it lower the freezing point of water, it raises the boiling point. Water has a high capacity to hold and transfer heat, the coolant modifies the water to lower the freeze point and raise the boil point. 50/50 is the most effective mix.

Engine coolant contains anti-foaming agents, lubricates the water pump and contains corrosion inhibitors. It's these additives that deplete and dictate a flush and fill every 2 years.

As for the brand, go for the higher-end stuff. Make sure it says "protects aluminum" on it. Your higher end coolants will have less contaminants (abrasives) in it to help protect that expensive Ferrari water pump. The new Prestone extended life is good. And you should mix it with distilled water so you don't introduce any minerals into your cooling system.
