Yesterday was my Mother-in-Law's birthday and I had to do the family thing. The whole clan was there. My Cousin-in-Law, Josh, had never ridden in a Ferrari and hinted around that he wouldn't mind going for a ride. Well, it didn't take much convincing to get me behind the wheel to give him a little spin. I ran it through the gears for him and he was impressed with the acceleration and handling. (and the comfort, the car is suprisingly comfortable and Josh is a pretty good sized fellow).

On the way back we are at a stop sign and one of those new Nissan 350Z's passes by. Nice looking car. He's got the top down and when he goes by he is giving us the once over. We pull in behind and the 2 of us are travelling down the road following a pickup truck towing a camper. I can see him checking out my car in the rear view mirror. After a while the pickup turns off and the Nissan speeds up, I speed up, then I realize the Nissan is speeding up A LOT! So I speed up a lot. It doesn't take long before we are both travelling down this winding back road at speeds far in excess of what the signs on the side are recommending. This guy is trying to lose me and I am on his tail like glue. Josh had been talking about how he likes the 350Z and he is impressed with how well it goes down the road. He says, "Wow! I had no idea that those 350Z's went so well." I look over at him and remind him that we are matching him in an antique Ferrari.

That's right folks, a 25 year old Ferrari will go head to head with the best Nissan has to offer in 2004. Not to take anything away from the 350Z, but I told Josh, "Do you realize that I paid less for my Ferrari than that guy paid for his Nissan, my car is now worth more than what I paid for it, it only costs $90 to register it, the insurance is only $200 per year and the guy with the new Nissan was checking US out."

Well, the speedometer on the '79 pegs out at 85 mph but we were definately going over 100 on a few stretches.

Well, the car had some breathing room, I was white-knuckled on the wheel for a bit.

nice one Pete

while i liked your story...i have to say nissan really dissapointed me on this one...sorry being a diligent nissan Z32 owner i had to outcry my sympathy to the guy in the 350Z...its upsetting nissan have not released a turbo version of the 350z...mine is an early model and sad that since the release of the Z32 to the 350Z has been 15 years...15 years of better technology and they let us down...it goes to show the Z32 was a car very much ahead of its time...

I agree. A brand new Nissan Z with all the latest technology should be able to out accelerate and out handle a 25-year-old 308. I know that guy was trying to shake me, but he couldn't get away.

moral of the story must be not to play with pete in his 308

Cheers

Quite the opposite!! I enjoy having fun but I will be the first to back down if the games get a little beyond my abilities. I'm no Micheal Schumacher. The performance of the 308 is limited by me, not the other way around.

I hate to say this Pete but I would hesitate to race a 350Z from a dead stop. They are pretty fast off the line. My 308 puts down fair power but it is not a dragster by any means. My 240Z will beat it in a drag race up to 90 MPH. From there the 308 is all over it.

Racing from a rolling start is the way to go and fun to boot. Glad to hear you could hang with the guy.

I am always surrounded by cars in my club that are 10, 15 or 20 years newer and it is quite a job to keep up with these guys on our more spirited drives.

On one such occasion I was running with the gang that included the usual 355's, 360's etc...........but in addition to that there was a newly aquired F40 and 360 Stradale. I was passed at least 6 times by these guys but enjoyed every minute of it. Wished I had a video camera.

The key to keeping up with these guys? MOMENTUM, and keeping the engine above 4,000 RPM!

I was told that out of all of the requirements the race driver needs, in order of importance, is horsepower. Great to see an old 308 still shine on the road in this high tech world. Just proves that the basic design is a sound one, (even though the car is under powered).

Oh, I couldn't agree with you more!! I tell everyone that the car comes alive at 100. When I give people rides I tell them to see the difference when the car gets up over 5,000 rpm. They are like "Wow!"

So no, I'm not going to drag race anybody. But if you want to tangle with me on the highway, just remember that I can still drop down into second while you are in fourth.

Does a brand new Nissan or any other similar car have that personality like a 308?

BTW, I don't know the difference between a GTS and a GTBi. I guess one of those is the "Magnum" car 8) where Higgins is always keeping an eye on.

308 GTS/GTB is a carbureted car.
308 GTS has the Targa top. S for Spider
308 GTB is the hard top. B for Berlinetta
308 GTSi/GTBi is the early injected 308 with 2 valves per cylinder.
308 GTS/GTB QV is the later injected car with 4 valves per cylinder.

These are all designations for US spec cars.

All of Magnums cars were GTS's starting with a carbureted car and moving on to a 2 valve injected and then a 4 valve. There were 4 cars of each type used to shoot the show.
