Speedometer accuracy

Does anyone know how accurate Ferrari speedometers are? Do they read too fast or too slow?

It depends:

If my mothers in the car - I'll tell her it reads fast.

If one of my mates is in the car - then you'd be amazed now slowly it reads!!!

Nice answer.

thom360,

This is the first time this question has ever graced theses pages so I don't know the answer. I'm interested to find out now. I'm guessing pretty damn accurate.

I'm not so sure - I think it's natural to assume that as it's a jolly expensive car it's going to have a jolly accurate speedo. But I've heard that Mercedes speedos - until the very recent models - used to regularly read +10% - which is an awful lot!!
Sub-standard suppliers are not tolerated anymore by Ferrari or any of the manufacturers. They were excusablr before, but not any more.

The speedos are accurate. Don't let others tell you otherwise.
It's nice to hear that they're accurate because my M3 speedometer is at least 5 MPH fast.
Borrow a GPS unit from a friend and you can find out. Of course if it isn't the highest quality, the GPS will be a little off too. However, you will easily be able to detect errors of +-%5-10.
I always suspected my speedo was reading faster than I was actually going. I obtained a GPS and confirmed that it's about 10% out. i.e. when reading 100mph I'm actually doing 90mph.
I found an article saying that the speedo of an 456 GT read 210 when travelling at 200 km/h
I have always thought that all speedos read a little high (eg, 210 when doing 200, etc) for legal purposes. You wouldn't want things the other way around (reading 200 when doing 210), and it is probably just a querstion of how much tolerance is given. My guess would be reading 5% - max 10% fast.
Did a trip upto Birmingham today in my Merc, the sat nav unit was indicating that the speedo was 4-5% out. (When the speedo was reading 90 I was actually doing 86).

I then started to wonder if the amount of tread left on my tyre would have any significant affect on speedo reading. Well....

My Merc has 18" alloys, fitted with 275 35 tyres.
When tyres are new they come with 7mm of tread (I think), the limit (in UK) is 1.6mm.
diameter of wheel in mm = 9*25.4 = 228.6mm
depth of tyre wall = 275 * 0.35 = 96.25mm
max wheel diameter = 228.6 + 96.25 + 7 = 331.85mm
min diameter of wheel = 228.6 + 96.25 + 1.6 = 326.45
With wheel diameter being directly proportional to speed then the difference is (331.85-326.45)/331.85 * 100 = 1.6%!!

Not much really.

Andy - you definitely need to get out more!!!

Andy, you're my kind of guy. What I try to have conversations like that with civilians they look at me like I'm crazy.

I traded my M3 for a C2 today. Is it crazy to have Ferrari and a Porsche in the garage? If I snows, I'll stay home. We don't need no stinking SUV!

I too have a Porsche GT3 and 360 Modena (sold that). But My Stradale will arrive soon.

To me it's the enjoyment of driving the cars rather than the ownership that exciting.
You traded an M3 for a C2? Was it the E46? Aside from the nominally clunky SMGII upshifts, i think it's a really good car. I've driven it daily for the past week and have clocked up almost 2,500kms. I just can't keep my hands off of it. :green: Haven't driven the C2 so i can't compare. The 911 GT2 on the other hand is frighteningly awesome. Scares the crap outta me. Probably cause it wasn't mine and i wasn't the one driving it. :)

I thought about getting a GT3, but can't justify the expense. I drove the M3 for over two years, it's a fast car with flaws. Yes, it was the E46. I've never owned a Porsche, so here goes!

I have a Ferrari and a Porsche in the garage but the Porsche happens to be an SUV  Then again I live in Switzerland and it does snow often here, especially in the mountains so an SUV is much more sensible than in NY. Coincidentaly the 360 I just bought replaced a C4...

I remember hitchhiking in the mountains of Switzerland in 1971 (I'm 50). We went from Interlaken to Grindelwald and back. We got a ride from a nice family, but the driver was quite drunk. Thankfully we stayed on the road.

It was the most beautiful country I've ever seen.
