I imported a Ferarri 250GTE (#3181) from northern Italy in 1975. I
subsequently sold it (I wish I hadn't) & lost track of it. I've
often wondered what happened to it. I have no ulterior motives for
finding my old Ferrari; I'm just curious as to where it is, if it's
still on the road, etc., etc.. I would like to see a photo of what it
looks like now if it's not too much trouble to the present owner.
Also, if the present owner is interested, I will be happy to send
copies of my 1975 import documentation.

S/n 3181. 250 GTE. Was 250 GTE. Now 250 TR replica.

2001, 6 April, Techno Classica, Essen, Germany. Red. Rebodied in Italy by
Giordanengo.

2001, 30-31 July, Modena Motorsport Festival. Red. 234 ASR 92, F.

2001, 1 August, Wolf/Viesmann Ferrari-Challenge, Nurburgring. Red/black.

2002, 4-7 April, Techno Classica, Essen, Germany. Huberti Auto. 275,000
Euros.


Additional info is that it was for sale with Athanee/MMC in Paris, a few years ago.

I greatly appreciate the information.

It sounds like S/N 3181 has evolved into a more exciting life than it would have had if it had remained with us.

Should anyone have a photo of 3181 in its new 250 TR skin, I would appreciate an email attachment. I have a line of pictures on the wall of cars that I have owned. I might hang the 3181 / 250 TR picture under the old picture of it as a 250 GTE.

I was at Techno Classica in 2002, but i don't have it on a digital pic, i went with some crappy digital camera that day and a small chip.
but i also took my regular camera along, and shot several roles, so i will check those out and hope that they are on one of those

I really appreciate all the information on s/n 3181. It was a little like hearing about an old friend. The 250GTE was not the most desirable body style, but it was fun to drive through the twisty back roads. If anyone finds more photos, they would be appreciated. I want to get one good one for a 5" x 7" wall picture to hang with the old one.

Thanks again for the info that you sent to me about a year ago on ol' SN 3181. It took me a long time, but I now have the picture of it as a 250 TR hanging under my old picture of it in its original 250 GTE configuration. I am going to attempt to attach my old picture (taken around 1976) to this message. This picture was taken after I had stripped many layers of paint & had it resprayed in its original (& fairly boring) tan color.

If this doesn't work, and if anyone wants the picture, I will be happy to email it to you.

The Ferrari probably represents the high point on my picture wall. My present toy is a "Cooper-ized" Austin Mini that is at the mechanic's shop getting a serious engine upgrade (boring, pistons, cam, etc.).

I went through MANY layers of paint to find the original & had it matched. It was an unexciting khaki tan color. The 1st attachment is a scan of my wall picture that has yellowed with age. The 2nd has been color adjusted by one of our graphics people. The interior was upholstered in tan fabric (wool?), not leather.

Rosso:
I would love to still have the old Ferrari. At the time it was just that, an old Ferrari that had developed some noises. So, I sold it. Unfortunately, we don't have the benefit of hind sight until it's many years too late.

Yes, the Mini is a ball to drive. It has been undergoing an endless engine rebuild (+0.30, dished pistons, racing cam, etc). Hopefully, it will be on the road again soon for some white-knuckled driving fun. Incidentally, I drove my 1st Mini Cooper back when I had the 250GTE, and I remember thinking how much fun it was. So, I finally bought one.

I was sitting here in my office looking at the pictures on the wall of the old cars I've had. So, I thought I would revisit the thread I started several years ago when I was trying to track down my old 250GTE (s/n 3181). It was interesting to find that it had been re-bodied as a TR, but it was sad to hear that the conversion was not one of the best.
I was just curious. Have there been any recent sightings? Is it still showing up occasionally at shows around Europe?

Henry- Welcome back. Sad story about your GTE, but very common. My first two Ferraris are both somewhat bastardized, but not as badly as your now poor TR copy. My 72 Dino was converted to a flares and chairs coupe, totally non-original for the Dec 71 build, and my Daytona had the top chopped.

Oh well. Will see if I can find anything on your 3181. Who did the conversion?

According to Niels' post above (7/25/03), it was done by Giordanengo in Italy (evidently on a Monday after a rough weekend). But, that's the only info I have.
