Hi All, it is about time my 1979 Boxer got a correct period radio cassette player. It seems a bit incongruous given that I never use the sound systems in any of these old cars - they make their own wonderful music IMO. I understand from Paul's great posts that the Pioneer KE 4300 (without graphic equaliser) is correct for this particular car. I would be grateful for any contacts that might enable me to track one down for a reasonable price.
Best wishes, Sean

You can find some of the radios, but you need one with the tiny Ferrari badge on it, for your car to be correct and they are like hens teeth. I will contact the person I bought my car from he actually may have a second one, but it may not work.

He just has an equalizer which he would part with with the brochures for it for $600.00. He mentioned the decal had worn off, but it has been replaced so looks perfect if you have any interest. EQ were part of the system.

Said some well know aftermarket company has radio & EQ for $6,000.00 - yes 6 thousand dollars - Dr Evil tone in voice - just crazy.

$6K for an out of date car stereo!!! Dr Evil tone indeed. Internet is great for many things but it does allow a few scammers to operate.

Actually if you google the radio, you will find one here. Original radios for your classic car under "new added radios" near the bottom of the list, but not ferrari specific - no little horsey.
Cant quite get over the price of US$700. Last one on ebay went for 126 pounds. Might get there but will keep looking for a while. If it had the horse maybe. Thanks for the help. S

genuine bbi pioneer ke-4300 radio cassette ,with dancing horse logo

hi , just scouring the posts and came across this thread , i have a genuine bbi pioneer radio cassette ke-4300 all complete dancing horse logo on the fascia ,i may have the equalizer as well , there is a difference in the fascia panel on the ferrari units and the commercially available units , the ferrari fascia panel is black and obviously has the dancing horse logo , the commercially available units have a gunmetal coloured fascia , the fascia for a ferrari is also a slightly different shape , so although you may be able to pick up a 4300 and get a logo made , technically colourwise it will never be correct for a ferrari. forgive me but i know nothing about ferrari , but i do have an extensive knowledge on 80s pioneer car audio , i will be advertising the ferrari unit i have in the next few weeks , it will be fully serviced beforehand with new cassette drive belts , i will be able to supply photos next week , and i can post worldwide or meet within the uk if that is preferred.

Hi Jamesie. Count me interested in the 4300 if you plan to part with it. The BBi unit you have is slightly different but close enough for what I want. Happy to negotiate directly or participate in an auction if you prefer. I travel a fair bit so auctions don't always work for me. In any case let me know what you want to do. Thanks for responding. Best wishes. Sean

In the 365BB there were no specific radios. Mine had a Voxson 8-track that was put in by the factory (with no Ferrari logo of any kind - bogstandard), but it was also often the case that the client had the dealer put one in of their choosing.

I'm interested to know if anyone knows when this changed. I thought early 512BB's had the same thing going, so perhaps a 1979 car doesn't need - or shouldn't have - the Pioneer? Does anyone know more?

I think that you are correct Onno. However I too would like to have this confirmed. My understanding was that 365 and 512 BBs were dealer fit sound systems. The factory started fitting the KE4300 (with graphic equaliser) with the BBi I believe. If this is true then any good quality period stereo would be perfectly acceptable. Unfortunately my 512 BB has been fitted with an expensive but particularly ugly piece of bling from the 90's. Be nice to have somethig that looked correct in the car - dont realy care what it sounds like because the sound of the car always rules the day. Best wishes Sean

I happened to have all my Boxer's paperwork handy when I read this (as I am considering parting with her), so here are the original order forms.

I don't think it is conclusive, but I think the case was that the radio was included in the price, but a dealer fit item along with a couple of other UK market tweaks.
The position of the "radio" items on the forms and the surrounding text seems to imply it was done post-factory.

I'll let you make up your own minds......

There is similar documentation for 365BB #17977 (now quarryman's), but it also contains the Ferrari SpA delivery note from Italy (with prices in Lire :)), which lists the 8-track radio that is still in it. So at least for that car, also a UK car, it was fitted in Italy.

Personally, I think it was pretty loose in those days and as a client you could just say what you wanted. If they had it in Italy, they could mount it there, otherwise the dealer would do it for you.

P.S. Jon, why does the first form state 308 GTB? Was it a trade-in? I can't quite read the small print on the scan.

My messages to you are bouncing back Jamsie. Is your email address listed in the for sale section correct? Looks like [email protected] Best wishes Sean

Yeah - sorry Onno - poor iPhone workmanship there!
The 308 was evidently traded in against the 512. The top left of the form shows "512 BB"
