i've got an 1983 mondial and would like to try it on a more modern tyre design than the original twx's. any ideas?

Welcome arbath74.

First check exactly what tyres you currently have, as they will most likely be either WXWs or TRXs if Michelin.

If WXWs then no worries, you can happily go out & find alternative tyres of the same size that suit the kind of driving you want to do (eg P6000, etc).

If you've got TRXs however, the car will have "metric" sized rims that can only take the TRX tyre. The non-standard rim dimensions & mounting flange mean that you can't fit anything else. As the TRXs are v. expensive, hard to source & basically "old-tech" you may prefer to go the way of replacing the rims altogether with something else (maybe larger diameter) & then fitting modern tyres. More money initially but you will save after a couple of tyre sets.

I have an '84 Mondial QV. Mine came with the metric wheels and TRX Michellins. Rather than try to deal with the metric tires, small wheels, I got a set of 16" after-market rims with Yokohama AVID AVS tires on them. 205/50-16's up front (8"wide rims) and 225/55-16's in back (9" wide rims). The wheel wells on the Mondial are plenty big, so you can easily accomodate a larger rim and wider tires on the car. The new tires/rims perform much better than those chunky TRX's did. 16" or 17" rims are definitely the way to go.

I'm probably going to replace the Yoko's with a more performance tire. When I do, I'll probably go to 225/50-16s up front and 245/45-16's in the back. I'm thinking Kuhmos.
