Not that it helps, but I know the 1999's are a hell of a lot easier to get Americanized than the 2000+. To bring a car over from Europe and get it legal in the US will run you anywhere from $15-25,000 USD.
Yeah, this would make the '99 even more attractive. Perhaps the 2000+ are more in the US due to the factory having to get them legal before shipping them.
