First off, like you said Barry, those Fords and others were drawing in COLD air directly from cut-outs above the engine cover/lid. I'm afraid in the 308's case, there is that body-work between the grills that would hamper air-flow and reflect heat down to the carbs.

But like you said Pete, you could take a sawz-all to the deck lid...

Pete, please check the height of the filters before ordering/purchasing. The 308's airbox is quite a low profile, meaning that there probably isn't much room under the lid.

That problem could be solved just by buying a GT4, it lends itself well to lidless driving...

Pete, I had the same image pop into my head and thought of overhead shots of those Le Mans racers. As I said, I wasn't too sure if any 308 owner would do it, but why not get a second engine deck hood. Put the original deck away and enjoy your view of the stacks out the rearview mirror!

Barry

ps the new GT 40 just has a glass cover where the cut-out was on the originals. It's fuel-injected. We're lucky to have those carbs!

Sounds like a good idea. Once-and-a-while, there are 308 deck-lids that come up for sale on Ebay, they haven't been too expensive. Or, if you have the skill, make a fiberglass mold and make your own lid.

Thinking of the movie "Le Mans," I remember scenes of the cars in the pits shot from overhead. If I remember correctly, you could look right down into the carburettors and see the leaves moving in unison. I guess they didn't even bother with air filters as the engine only had to last 24 hours.

Peter,

As you said, "You bet!" Originally, I set out to find a QV. I kept an open mind to the earlier carburetted 308s. One test-drive in a carbed 308 and I quickly forgot all the QVs I had tested.

airfilters

Hello, i hope you pardon me for my poor English, i'm Dutch and i live in Germany and i'm a typical DIY. I'm convinced, as it is also my experiance troughout the years, dat it's not only a matter of performance-loss that should be accounted for. The temperature rises to a unwished level when one uses separate filterelements. If you want a fine filter, use the K&N replacement and keep the perfect cool ram-airsystem that Ferrari has developed. To hot air creates overheating. You don't want any extra factors that encourage this unwanted fenomena. I'm building a vetroresina trackday-car and wil send some pictures in the near future of the progress.

Greetings and compliments for this forum.
Good luck, keep it cool.

Hi all!

Barry Wolinsky here.

Because the Ferrari has those open scoops which allow for ingestion of debris and until I can find or make the grills that came on some European 308s,

Barry
Barry,
I have a Euro 308 with the grill in the scoops. If you want to make them, all you need to do is go to a Home Depot or Lowe's and get some 1/4 inch hardware cloth. It is an exact match. Just paint it black.

I installed a K&N on my '80 GTSi only for the long term durability (with proper maintenance, oil, cleaning, etc) No performance gain I can feel. While not an issue for carb'ed of Bosch Jet-tronic FI cars I have heard that on some modern cars with Mass-Air systems that use a heated wire system the oil from an K&N can blow off and collect on the wire and cause damage and high $$ replacement of the Mass-Air sensor. Just what I've heard.

I put the K&N air filter in the airbox on my '82 GTBi and so far, it seems great!! What harm could it cause for the injected models? The original, or whatever one was in when I bought it, is still in great shape, but I thought the K&N would improve things a bit, am I wrong?? Dennis

I have one in mine, can't really say I have noticed a difference, though it seems to sound better ;).

New cars with engine management systems utilising sensors have had them damaged by the oil from these filters that use oil as Tifosi says. Your 82 GTBi won't have these problems.
