Hi fellas! Does anyone have any tips/advice on how to get your ferrari for the long 3-4 month storage for winter.

Thought this would be a educational member thread for this coming winter.;)

The trouble with that Boxer is the salt they put on the roads here in New England. Sunny days also means slush and then that stuff freezes onto your car with the salt. No, Ferraris are not winter cars.

Here's what I do (and I live in Maine and store the car in an unheated garage):
1-Change the oils (engine and gearbox)
2-Check/Change coolant as required
3-Fill fuel tank and add fuel stabilizer (such as Stabil)
4-Run the car to make sure the treated fuel is in the carburetors
5-While the engine is running, spray fogging oil (available at most parts stores in your area) into the carburetors or air intake until a good white cloud of smoke pours from the exhaust (this makes sure all internal components are lightly coated with a film of the oil).
6-Remove the spark plugs and spray some fogging oil in each cylinder
7-Turn the engine over to blow out the excess oil and reinstall the plugs.
8-Spray a light coat of fogging oil on the engine surfaces.
9-Remove the battery and store it in the basement.

In the spring, put the battery back in and start it up. You’re all set, no special "spring start-up" procedures or anything like that. Just give it a bath. All the engine driven stuff I own gets this treatment before it gets stored, from the lawnmower to the Ferrari.

You'll hear a lot of people say that you should start the car up once or twice a month. I recommend against this. Once I put the car up, I do not start it again until spring. The reason for this is that when you start it your engine block will start to warm up and then when you shut the car off it cools back down and condensation will form inside the engine (one of the combustion by-products is water, HC + O2 = H2O & CO2). The condensation will cause rust on the cylinder walls and will mix with the sulphur (combustion by-product) to form sulphuric acid that sits in the bearings. The only way to boil off the water is to run the car UNDER LOAD for 20 minutes AFTER the engine is at full operating temperature. Just starting it up and letting it run in the garage for 10 or 15 minutes is actually worse than just leaving it alone.

Great tips! Pete from Maine. I have already completed steps 1 through 5, and would complete 6-9 this TG weekend.

Pete, you are absolutely right about the salts left in the road, although this wont be until we get a snowstorm, for now its usually late December when we get one.

Boxer, For now it is the cold that prevents me from riding during the winter, and since I don't ride with the top up, its a no go unless I wear a thick coat driving. I would go with Pete's advice and refrain from starting it up and riding until the first sign of warmth. I will heed Pete's advice about the formation and condensation of water as by products of combustion.

You don’t need to remove the battery, disconnect it and put a battery tender on it and it will be fine and your battery will last for years. It should even be done when not using it in the summer, it has a quick disconnect on it and it can be installed directly on the terminal bolts. I bought one from "Battery Tender" sold at most Harley Davidson shops because it’s officially approved by them as well as BMW. I bought the Junior for $40.00 and it works perfectly, it’s plugged to my ATV all the time and I once used it for a constant 3 months on my 04 Sierra and it was amazing. When I buy my F-Car I will pick up the 4-Bank Charger

you guys are crazy...The best method of "winterizing" a Ferrari is to contact a real estate broker in Phoenix...any other way is pure punishment.

Michael, there's very few protocols here, were a relaxed bunch. You'll have to work hard to offend us!

Coincidence - I'm a Mainer that used to work in Australia! I lived in Perth for 6 months.
