officialy a car becomes a classic after 20 years and an oldtimer after 25 years (in belgium that is).
But in my opinion it depends from car to car when it becomes a classic, considering the cars heritage and live it's led.
Like an F40 is defenitly a classic in my book. Think of it, the car has it all, the looks, the power, Enzo's last car.
And then you have cars that nobody cares about how old they are, like for instance a 30 year old Lada (maybe not the best example) not many people will consider this to be a real classic, non other the less it's age

That's really funny
in the new Classic Cars magazine there's an article called: What makes a Classic?
and they've made a list of 10 requirements that you have to rate till 10.
so here go's
1- It must have a prestige badge
2- It must have motorsport prestige
3- It must be aestheically appealing
4- It must be exlusive, though not to te point of uniqueness
5- It must have been desirable when new
6- It must have cultural signifigance
7- It must have design or engineering signifigance
8- It must have driving appeal
9- It must be good at what it's supposed to do
10- It must be worth investing time or money in

The 250 GTO was one of the cars rated and had the best (ofcourse) score of 98%
all perfect score except on number 7 where it got an 8 wich i think deserves also a 10

BTW there's also an article in it about the 166 Spyder Corsa, the reason why o bought the mag in the first place

Peter,
granted mechanically there was nothing new, but they did a great job on the caroserie in terms of putting the car in a windtunnel now, the GTO gets a great result
Don't forget that the GTO is an evolution of the SWB
