Well, in most Ferrari circles the year 1973 is a benchmark. Before 1973 is a claasic, after that it is a modern car! In general, I find exotic cars in general classics, even if they are still being produced, like the Mucielago.

However, if you would want to have a defintion in general, I would suggest something like:

'it has been out of production and there are enthousiasts for it (e.g. owner clubs do exist for the specific type)'

Yep I agree on that:

Classics that do not perform well:

T-Ford
VW Beetle
Citroën 2CV
Citroën DS/ID
Volvo Amazone

even a 308 GTB is not a ultra fast car, but it is a classic nevertheless.

Also classics are made by commercialism!
Just look at TV and films and the cars always ended up being a classic:

Take the James Bond cars, the Miami Vice cars, the Magnum car, Knightrider, A-team, Dukes of Hazzard, the Saint, the Avengers, Back tot the Future, Cannonball Run etc. etc.

They all drove classics, didn't they?
