Well, it was a beautiful crisp day here in the central valley, the rain had stopped and I felt it was about time to take my (new to me but used) 550 out for it's first trip since it had been trailered here from the dealer. I got about 10 miles down the road only to hear the pop of a rock hitting the windshield. Although intially there was only a small mark, by the time I got home it is now a crack about 3 inches long heading for the center. Therefore it looks like I will be needing a new windshield. Does anyone know of a good source besides the dealer network? I had found about 7 years ago a source for the rear window of my testarossa which had cracked (3 times due to a weld bead in the body) and it was about 1/2 the cost of the dealer but have lost the receipt. I know some people will say if you drive a car like that why are you worrying aobut the cost but a penny saved is a penny earned ... and if you save enough pennies you can buy a car like this.....Thanks.

Have you priced one at the dealer? Just curious.
Try Ferrari UK http://www.ferrari.co.uk If their price is low enough it would be worth the shipping.

The dealer here wants $2739 for the window plus $321 for the mouldings which he says usually can't be saved. Will keep looking and try the uk. Thanks.

Wow. I hope I never need a windshield for my Ferrari. It's funny, last time I bought a windshield for my Jeep it was $100 installed. I broke that windshield by resting the full weight of the vehicle on it. Long story, don't ask.

I thought most insurance companies covered glass with no deductible. Have you called your agent? Even if there is a deductible applied it sounds like it would be worth it.

Off topic but that windshield costs more than my whole car's worth.

Aye - that's the way it tends to be in the UK too. Definitely worth a try - you may have glass cover without realising.

i don't know how it is in the US
but here in europe there's a company called CarGlass with speciallizes in replacing car windows, they say that they can get any window for every car and cheaper.

it depends on what kind of insurrance you have if its covered or not

Just a follow up for everyone... I finally got my windshield and had it put in. I probably saved 3/8ths what I would have had to pay through the dealer, buying it through Ferrari-Marenello. Installed my costs came to about $2100 which while is still significant, a lot less than I had expected. (I also just had to fix the windshield on my Ford Focus and that was only $300.) I can honestly reccommend these folks should any of you get into the same trouble.
