F1 360 or Manual?

Hi all,

Just wanted to say what a great site this is. Full of interesting info and nice pics!

Anyway, my question to you all is that I am looking to buy a 2004 360 spider in a few weeks... and can't seem to make up my mind if it should be with the F1 paddle shifts or a manual? Can anyone give any insight as to which they feel is best... and why?

I have test driven both... but still can't seem to be able to make up my mind!!! Is the clutch likely to last longer in one as opposed to the other? This will be my first Ferrari, and the shape of the 360 has always appealed to me. So any general advice on the pros and cons of the 360 Spider would also be very useful.

Any advice would be greatly appreiciated!

ooooh as an Englishman that hurts.. The English car industry is a "wonder to behold" (ie: It does not really exist anymore)

Dermot,

I hope you’re joking…no offense intended to the English/British car industry, on the other hand, they make great cars but their quality control is a bit on the shady side. I guess Jaguar has actually improved since Ford bought them a few years ago! My Land Rover was a lemon! I finally got rid of it and my wife chose to buy a Suburban (go figure). A reliable source told me BMW dropped the Rover acquisition a couple years back due to out of control warranty returns.

Cheers,
Yeah I'm really hurt :) No, only kidding.. The British car industry is a joke (Even in the UK) so don't worry about it!

Ddemet,

I do admire people who drive their Ferraris... They were produced to be driven. But, I have a hard time imagining all that mud and crud in the wheel wells and under the car and inside the suspension... My wife says I am sick! I am saying this because for the forst time I drove my car in the rain after Tubi was fitted and I was so anxious to pick it up that I ended up driving it back in the rain. For the last 6 weeks or so I was so annoyed every time I looked at the wheel wells... I hope you don't feel the same. But yesterday I picked it up after a Concourso style detail job and the car looks brand new again. How about that? I am going to continue to drive it regularly and to try to avoid the rainy days... By the way, your 360 is a beautiful car, and I liked your reasoning for the front grills. Mine are the same way, mine also has the rear challenge grill which provides an extra heat dissipation here in California on sunny days. It works well.

By the way, I saw your plate on one of your earlier posts and was wondering if you send me a private message and let me know what it is or means.

Cheers,

>dirt on the car: As you can see on the pics it was a very sunny day here by the lake and I couldn't resit going for a ride 8) . The region being quite steep you can easily gain a few hundreds of meters of altitude within a couple of kms and unfortunately, after a short drive, the clean, dry, lake-side roads gave way to melting-snow-wet and salty roads  . Took the picture on the way down. Washed it straight after :) !!! See attached picture in the afternoon at the same spot.
Yann was especially critical of the 'dirty car' photo
I hope everybody is reassured my car is clean again.

BTW those mountains in the background are right above the French town of Evian and, presumably, the inspiration for the picture on the bottles.

>grills: thanks for the comment! I am sure your car must be wonderfull too! Any pics??
As for the back grill, I thought heat dissipation must not be too much of a problem (especially in Switzerland!) otherwise they would have fitted it on all 360s. Furthermore I like the 'blue metal/red lights' look and a black grill would have spoilt it a little (could have had it painted of course...).

>licence plate: All Swiss licence plates have the two-lettre Canton (State) identifer followed by (up to) 6 digits. Lausanne is located in Canton of Vaud (VD) hence the plate. I just used the VD part of the pic to camouflage the numerical part. I've seen it done before. No special significance!

>'ring: it must have been very sad! Do you know how it happened?

Glad to see the beauty all cleaned up! Here's a picture of mine at the Laguna Seca open track day a couple of weeks ago! Mine is a Rosso Dino, and I regularly drive it but it is not my daily driver.

Rear Challenge grill: I have noticed that the Tubi is actually cooler than OEM muffler, but that may be because it occupies a lot less space too. The challenge grill's purpose is to vent off the hot air quickly, and you probably don’t need that in Switzerland. This is not scientific but I used have the car to cool down for at least 30 min., before I would have the grill washed otherwise the soap would discolor the grill and leave some kind of residue. And during this period one could not touch the grill. Because of the Tubi, within 10 minutes the grill cools down substantially and no longer is there the danger of burn while touching the grill (my observation).

Cheers,

By the way, a friend of mine installed rear challenge grill on his red 360Modena and had it painted the same color. The car looked weird from up close. Here's picture! It is a matter of taste, and in my opinion if you want to paint it the same color why change to challenge grill. He ended up painting it black again!

Well, your TDF 360 looks real good with that great scenic background!

The Challenge grille does look different, painted. Although I think I personally like the contrast of the black on the coloured body.
Does anyone have any nice pics of a black 360 spider with tan interior that they can post?
Dj Dirk:

I didn't know Jens but read about it. Must have been terrible. Lost two friends in a car crash some years ago but not on a track day.

4i2fly:

your car looks great, especially on the track. As for the grill I guess it is really a question of taste (like the box!). I prefer it the way I ordered it but the grill is very nice too.

i had met yens at Spa where he had already offered me a ride around the track, but cuz of terrible weather he didn't took it out anymore.
so when i heard the news that evening it really was a big shock
