Hello everyone;

I have purchased a 1986 Testarosa that had no engine in it.
I see the engines cost a great deal and to maintain one is also quite expensive.

I want to get advice on an engine swap.I know the swap will be expensive, yet if I go with an American engine or VW it will be much less expensive to maintain.

I am trying to get the address, phone, e-mai of the company that built the stunt Testarosa for Miami Vice. The Roberts Motor Company.

If anyone has leads on this company or other companies that might be able to assist me, it would be appreciated.

The stunt Testarossa was actually a rebodied Pantera. They didn't put a V8 in the Testarossa.

I'd say start saving your pennies for an engine out of a totaled Testarossa. They're out there... You'd probably wind up spending the same amount as you would converting it to an American V8.

If you have the knowledge and experience to the swap you can do the regular maintenance on the V12.

Thank you for your replies. Does anyone have the e-mail, address, phone number for Roberts Motor company that put the Testarosa panels on the Pantera.

Also does anyone have information on a shop that would look into a project of doing an engine swap in the Testarosa like mentioned above.

I am surprised that many people do not do engine swaps for these cars. As parts get harder to get and the cost gets higher, I see this as the most logical way to keep these cars on the road where they belong.

To put a different engine in a TR is a neat idea....but you'd have to ditch the entire Ferrari engine management system. Also TR's engine/trans are one above the other. Not sure what other engine-trans combination would even remotely fit this configuration. I'm sure something could be worked out, maybe an older Olds Toronado or Caddy Eldorado engine/trans would work. I imagine there would be some frame modifications needed too. If someone had the time to spend and the necessary fabrication skills anything could be done.

It's been a while....do you still have the car? What progress has been made?

I've had quite a bit of experience with my TR doing several engine-out services and stuff. I would keep my eye open for a TR or even a 512TR (more power) motor. They are out there and you can expect to pay from $20k to $25k for a good one.

Is the transaxle still with the car? If so I can't imagine how you'd get any other motor to mate up even with extensive machine work....but with enough money thrown at it anything is possible. I have heard of chevy engines mated to a Porsche transaxle.....this might work but it would still be tons of work and fabrication. And what about the engine management systems?

If you still have the car....is it in great shape body-wise? How's the interior? If any of these is a mess then you have either a very nice parts car or an expensive road ahead to get it road-worthy.

Please let us know this status.....this is a fascinating topic!

I know that a big block Chevy has been put in a TR but the engine management system was dumped and a new oil pan was built, running a dry sump as I remember. The Motor had very strange mounts and the transaxel bellhousing was custom, it can be done. Were it me I would just find a 512 motor, but you could use a Chevrolet motor for a bit less money and get more horsepower except for the fact that all the fabrication would be most likely run the cost up to the same price either way.
