What are the tell tale signs of a cracked manifold?

There are a couple of ways to tell if you might have a problem.

- is the car down on power
- lift the engine cover with the engine running at +3000 rpm, put your hand over the top of the engine on both the right and left hand sides (i.e over where the manifolds connect to the engine block), if you feel air/exhaust on your hand it can indicate a problem
- does the cars soundtrack now sound different under acceleration

If any of the above, I would take it in a get it looked at. Cracked manifolds are not an if, but a question of when on the F355.

Dude...you just got that beauty. Are you fearing cracks already?
I put about 200 miles the first couple of days already, some at almost red line (8K) at third gear which seems to be the power spot of my f355.

so much different that my 325is, big big diff.

anyway, yea i felt some warm air on my rear right side wheel well after a hard run i did on the country side. it may just be the cooling fan on the radiator side. I am just worried bout those cracked manifolds, and it had just been replaced last year or 2 i believe.

it checked out ok on my ppi too.

i dont think its down on power, i did a quick 0-60 test and was in the upper 4's not even redlining 1st, just a smooth shift to 2nd then im at 60.

i still have to check that second form of test later, i will respond tonight.

well, if it was ok on the PPI, it should be ok now, only 200 miles after...

isn't it possible to look at the manifolds? I would try to do that =P maybe if you raise the car and look from the floor...

but I'd say you're being overcareful hehehehehe go enjoy that ride =D

The F355 that I worked on with one cracked manifold sounded like the muffler had fallen off. Nothing subtle about it, just plain obnoxious. Is yours louder than when you got it? -Steve

Yes Stile, I am just a bit over cautious. I checked it out with my neighbor and found out it was the radiator fan blowing the warm air. Although I am wondering why the other one is not blowing as powerful, so I will check out the other side.

The sound still sounds the same. I guess if it did crack it would have a god awfull sound and I would certainly notice.

Thanks fellas.

I finally did my 3 stage wax yesterday. Only 1 a year i need to do that and just touch up once in a while with a the deep shine gloss from gariets. Its parked in my garage so no need for too much waxing I think.

Yes, when the manifold cracks, you immediately know something is terribly wrong. You will actually be afraid to drive it. Have fun with the car, and when it happens, deal with it then. I'd love to take my car out today, but it is 109 degrees, so you do it for me :). -Steve

It has been a week and half since delivery and logged in about 150 miles.

I was stuck in traffic last night for about 30 mins. stop and go traffic. Car was running a bit hot.

By the time I got home, right before I got to my garage the check engine light came on. I was not worried at first, I thought, ah that will be gone as soon as I release the pressure from the tank since it was especially hot that night.

Next morning I start it up and the check engine light was still on. F%$#. I decided to give a nice run, well I wanted some dunkin donuts. As I park into the parking lot I scraped the front spoilers bad into the belgian block. Now I am really pissed.

Now, just a week and a half into ownership, I had the front spoilers scraped twice, had a tank of gasoline spill in my trunk, spoiling my tool kit , steering and both seat covers and my owners manual, had my neighbors kid scratch the back side with his watch accidentally and now the check engine light is on.

Bummer, just to think, what if I had bought this brand new.

Well, I look at it this way, its had its trial, trial by fire.

Don't be too down...Everything will turn out fine. I've had the "slow down 5-8" light illuminate twice on mine. Scared the bejesus out of me both times. Turned out to be moisture related. A heat sensor for the cat is under the driver side rear wheel well and highly exposed. First time was when I washed the car, second time was when I rinsed the wheel well. No more hoses going near that car. She wants and gets sponge baths. I'm glad mines not a red head. I understand there hairs are very fine (RCH). Brunette for me. We just celebrated our 1 month aniversary. Ohh...Just realized your avatar shows yours as a Blonde. The check Engine light just means she wants more attention. Buy her some nice jewelry like a new shift knob, brushed aluminum gage rings, or some drilled pedals. That ought to do it.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Saint. Yes my avatar is a blond which I shall be changing very soon to my own red head ;)

Yes, it has been a downer because my I was planning to take a drive down the shore (beach) here in jersey with the wife to enjoy the sun and ofcourse showcase it, but it had stayed in the garage since the mishap on saturday and check engine light on friday.

I think I may get her a new shifter and perhaps a nice oil change next week :D In the meantime she is getting some R&R, she did fine in almost an hour of traffic on friday and held up well until we got her home, then she gave me that check engine signal. Sadly, to pay her back, the next day I accidentally scraped her front spoiler, she must be pissed.

Funny, Scratching her under the chin doesn't work that well. My dog loves it but not my Fcar. Women, go figure.
