Hi all,
Would someone please tell me the purposes of this knob? Is this simply a battery disconnect device for winter storage?
Thanx 8)

Yep that's right.

Just a tip - it may pay to remove, clean & remake the 2 connections from the battery to the switch/earth, plus the earth-strap connection to body. After many years they can get pretty dodgy & this may cause all sorts of odd electrical behaviour.

I did this recently & it fixed: a "flicky" speedo, irregular door-lights and several temperamental console switches.

I agree with the suggestion of removing that switch. I had one in my '84 Mondial QV, and was having all kinds of electrical problems. I removed it all together and ran the grounding strap straight to the negative terminal. Cleaned up virtually all of the electrical "glitches" I was experiencing. That is not that unusual -- one of the main causes of electrical problems is a poor ground. The switch is garbage and should be removed IMHO. If you really want a switch/shutoff, get one of those green knob jobies that goes right on the negative terminal.
