yes, you are right. The 550 is not one of the Ferrari's people talk about. I think Andrew is on target about popularity and production numbers being a reason why. I wanted a 308 because of the instant recognizability around town. When the average "Joe" thinks of a Ferrari, it is a red '79 308 GTS (Thanks to Magnum P.I.! That was my first look at a street Ferrari and I said "I want that car!) You should be proud to have the 550 (I kinda think you are).
But, if this continues to bother you and you want to junk the car, let me know and I will come over with the trailer and haul it off for you. I am always willing to help a distressed Ferrari owner in need.
