On a generic completely open exhaust system: If one wanted to keep the loud clear overrun crackle from the exhaust but reduce the excessive booming low down bass sound around 500-2000 rpm, would it be adviseable to:

Place a small muffler on the central section of the exhaust, or place it at the end?

All other things being equal.

well, consider that I know nothing about acoustic, but I'd put it in the middle if you want to avoid the low down bass

my explanation (may be wrong, remember I know nothing)

low frequency means waves with bigger length, so if you put it in the middle you'd "brake" those waves, and only allow waves with smaller length to exist (those are the high tunes)

One has to know a few things to properly answer that question:

engine displacement
# cylinders
front or rear engine placement
header arrangement
# catalytic converters
one or two pipes in the exhaust
diameter of the OEM exhaust pipe.

For proper exhaust silencing the idea is to get similar but 100% opposite frequencies to overlay to create the noise cancellation. It does sound technical, yes.

Give me the above info and I may be able to assist you.
