Hi All

I am looking at a 550 maranello for sales in the UK, and have got details of the service history from the dealer.

After its original delivery inspection it didn't have its 6250 mile service until it had done 9690 miles 3 years later. Should I be worried by this?

Also, its on its original clutch after 21k miles, I assume this is a good thing indicative of not being thrashed, or do 550's clutches last longer than most other ferraris?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Alex,

The first major service was done at the 3 year interval, even if it was late by the miles, I wouldn't be too worried about this, as Ferrari service intervals are conservative in any case. 9,000 miles in 3 years means the car was driven, which is the best security against things going wrong. Also - the car was new at the time. You don't state, however, how long ago this was and what's happened in the last 10,000 miles.

In my pre-purchase spreadsheet I took 37,500kms for a clutch's life (23.5k miles), not sure where I got it from. May have been the EVO buyer's guide. My 550 has 31k (19k miles) on the dial, and the clutch is showing no signs of being anything but new. I've also heard about clutches lasting more than 30k miles. A lot of it has to do with the way the car is driven of course, so you're always going to have a bit of gamble there.

Good luck with the hunt! They're great cars.

Thanks Onno

Car has only been driven another 12k since and serviced once a year except 2 years since last service (being serviced before client purchase) but only 4k miles done in that time.

I've been looking through the forums and it seems there's not too many things to look out for past the usual car stuff. Seems early cars had hoses falling off and loose bits but this is a 2000 which seems a bit better.

I have been deliberating for ages over what to get, first 360, then 355, then Testarossa (I belong in the 1980s at heart), but for me the 550 almost does what the v8s do in terms of weekend driving fun , but adds in that bit of class (particularly looks wise), comfort and long distance capability.

Just hope the dealer isn't reading this or he will be hard to haggle with!

I would still recommend getting a detailed Pre Purchase Inspection (with a compression test) done. There are several highly regarded independent Ferrari mechanics in the UK who should be able to handle it for you.

In my experience they are very good at finding all the little things that I might miss.

Thanks

Does anyone know of a good pre-inspection company/ mechanic that would deal with kent?

Car I am looking at is the Black 550 at Kent High Performance Sports Cars, www.theferraricentre.com

Alex
Alex, You have a PM on the mechanic. I have used him several times and he is excellent.

On Kent/Ferrari Centre. Not bad but the only person I would deal with their is Roger.

Interesting stereo upgrade on the rear shelf - not seen that before. I like the prancing horse they put on there, although I'm not so enamoured with the big black speakers. Car looks nice but you can't really tell from pics.

One more thing, Alex: there are plenty of 550's on the market and they are slow to sell, generally. So don't buy if you're not 100% sure.

And haggling should be easy - it's a buyers' market at the moment.

Yeah I asked them if it was possible to remove the speakers on the Parcel Shelf. Apparently it was a factory fit thing, not sure its really needed with a Tubi on board.

Going to try and get it PPI'ed then start haggling. In no rush as have the cash sitting here, so can always wait or go for another.

Thanks for your help guys. Just need one in time for Royal Ascot!

Is it a case some 550's move quickly while others sit around, or is the whole market just very slow at the moment?

The market is certainly slow at the moment. But very nice ones do move fairly quickly usually - I mean there's always someone out there who really wants a 550 and they usually go for the very nice ones.

Royal Ascot is still some time away, so what I would do in your place is phone every well known dealer in the country and ask them to let you know if one is coming in. My own car was never advertised - I phoned my local specialist and he said: "there's one coming in tomorrow!" Nobody ever had a chance to buy it except me - he kept it off the market for me for a week and I bought it before the week was up.

This is one way you get a nice one. Of course you will pay a bit more because you won't get a chance to haggle hard since you have first option. I didn't haggle at all which made the car a couple of grand above market value, but on the other hand the specialist made sure the car was in top-class condition. I'm still very, very happy with the deal I made.

At the moment I am not bothered between red or black, but the car seems to lok good whatever its painted.

By the pictures it seems to be a pretty clean car. BTW what is this armoured thing they refer to?

Also, I use the rear shelf to carry luggage and it really is needed if you want spend a few days away from home, and pack as much volume as in an ordinary car, so the speakers would come out if it were for me.

I am having a window winding motor replaced on mine now because there is too much wind noise coming from the passenger side at speed and my wife notices it more (the speed). They (Ferrari) showed me they can't adjust the door any further and there is definitely some play on the window mechanism as it starts moving when you pull slightly the door handle. This gap is subsequent to a 30 minute exercise of trying to get the door open from the outside with the help of a wire coat hanger while the keys were in the ignition and the car had locked itself. 550 drivers, beware of this stupid situation, the car does lock itself. :(

The Amourfend is an invisible paint treatment that makes the paint realy resistant to stonechips etc.

I normally dislike the covers and things people put on the front of their cars to keep them looking good and new, which sort of defeats the object as it ruins the looks in the first place. So want to check out whether this treatment is invisible, or an unsightly film on the front of the car.

So when I buy a 550, don't get out fo the car with the engine running!

The 3M clear bra, amourfend etc is very hard to see and worth having to keep the front end free of major rock chip damage. I've never heard of anyone covering the entire car, only the front which is where most the damage occurs.

On some cars, and I am referring specifically to VAG models, you can have this feature switched off using the diagnostic computer. I quite like the idea of the car locking it self whilst driving, but not when stationary!

That's not the point. It's a mechanical issue. In the 550, locking from the inside is done by pushing down on a little plate in the middle of the door "pull open handle". Said little plate actually falls down onto the locked position easily by itself.

Guys (and girls), Quick Question, so you think serivce history like this looks normal:
Delivery Check
!st service 3 years after with 9600 miles
2nd service 1 year after 14500 miles
CAMBELTS done 1 month after
3rd Service 1 year after 18000 miles

That service was 20 months ago so Service + CAMBELTS on purchase would mean a 20 month gap and 5.5k miles in that time

Seems perfect to me, but wanted other opinions.

Thanks

Had a look at it today. Would come with a 3 month/ 3000 warranty from themselves so that was reassuring. Armourfend didn't look good on the front, would remove that.

I found the Tubi Exhaust to be very loud, esp standing behind the car. I wonder if that would become very annoying after a while. What are peoples thoughts on Tubis's, do you get used to the drone at low revs?

Anyway, the dealer wouldn't haggle and stuck to the asking price so I walked away.
