On Saturday Jazzy O and I met up for an impromptu drive through the Dutch countryside. Onno found some great back roads and I enjoyed a spirited drive in the 993 following Onno in his magnificent Maranello. Sunroof open, sunshine, beautiful countryside with few cars, Bacharat on the CD and the roar of the tubi-exhausted 550 ahead made for a memorable drive. Which became even more memorable once we hit the polders heading out of Amsterdam towards Lelystad. Onno generously offered me the driving seat of the 550.

I was enchanted by the drive in agp22's Maranello in March and was a bit concerned that perhaps that drive had led me to place the 550 on a pedestal. The concern evaporated with the whirr of the started motor and the smooth roar of the V12 flowing out of the tubi sports exhausts.

The epic view over the bonnet and the immense and effortless acceleration that I remeber from agp22's silver dream machine were all there. From 2000rpm in 6th, the car just lept forward. Far more fun was dropping to 4th and flooring it. The 550 is so fast! And musical. And awesome.

Sitting high up, the car shrinks around me, making me feel very comfortable but its roar and power are constant reminders to respect and control this wonderful machine without being rough. At once a car that strides across continents with immense style and comfort and at the same time a very fast and very exciting Ferrari.

The only downsides were brakes that felt slightly soft compared to the very firm pedal of the 993 (a minor downside indeed) and the fact that I do not have one (this is a bigger downside)!

This forum has introduced me to some real and generous enthusiasts and I am delighted that Schumacher introduced me to Ferrari Life a year ago.

I prefer to think of it as International Man of Mystery.

When Onno got to drive the 993, he was treated to Best of Motown. The golden thread running through these cds is that this music has soul. And is great to drive fast to.

There was a cd playing in the 550. I think. I did not pay much attention as the V12 war song was pure and beautiful music for me.

Vitalone, great to know you're having fun, but where's the 308? I only hear about you taking the Porsche out, you have to take the Ferrari to stretch it's legs too - no garage queens are allowed in this forum, remember that! :D

Absolutely agree with you stile-alpine. During the past 4 years I have covered 27,000 miles in the 993 exploring Europe (luckily I have not needed it for my daily commute as for the past 2 years I have cycled to work and for the 2 years before that, I walked to work while I lived in Guernsey). I intend to split Europe-touring duties between the 993 and 308 and with this in mind, on Friday I will be taking the 308 for a drive to St Malo, putting her onto a ferry and cruising across to Guernsey for the weekend. Getting excited for this 900 mile drive in the 308!

so you're spending all of your time driving across Europe, the major problem being the decision on taking the Porsche or the Ferrari out

that's a hard life! hehehehehe :)

Interesting to see how initial experiences transform to ultimate ownership over time.

Thanks for bringing my August 2008 thread back to life Barry! I was smitten with the 550 from the word go after sampling agp22's 550 that March (what has happened to ago22? Have not seen him around for a while. He was kind enough to toss me the keys to his lovely silver 550 for my first drive of a 550). That August drive of Onno's 550 confirmed that the 550 was one of the greats. Almost exactly 4 years later Onno helped me to find the bluebird. When I visited my specialist this past September, I saw her in the flesh and it was love at first sight. When I settled into the drivers seat, it felt like I was putting on a favourite jacket. My specialist has known her from 2003 and has just completed a big service on her. Deal done the next day! I cannot believe my good fortune! I have yet to drive her, I cannot wait! Roll on March when I will collect my birthday present and become her third owner.

Dreams come true even if it takes time and until the time is right (even if it may not seem like it at the time). And while having a lot of fun in the process.

Today I was fortunate enough to take to the wheel of a magnificent manual TdF 575, courtesy of fellow FL member 575er. What a machine. I have driven a couple of 550s but never a 575, and never pushed the 550 quite as hard as my spin in the 575 today.

An immense amount of power to hand, and the drive from low down in any gear is phenomenal. Brutally fast, yet quiet, comfortable, refined and nimble. I want aV12 more now than ever before.... :cry3:

Barry- The big 12s make glorious noises and have lots of power everywhere in the rev range. Glad you enjoyed the ride. 27% of RHD UK cars were three pedal compared to 11.9 % for total production. 69 of the 246 (28%) three pedal cars went to the UK. ROW percentage (less RHD) of three pedal cars was only 9.8%.

Today I was fortunate enough to take to the wheel of a magnificent manual TdF 575, courtesy of fellow FL member 575er. What a machine. I have driven a couple of 550s but never a 575, and never pushed the 550 quite as hard as my spin in the 575 today.

Stop crying and go get one, mate...you know you can't resist....:deal: (and while you're at it, arrange to be there on FLED...)

Barry, it was a great way to spend a morning out in unseasonably mild weather on great roads in two fabulous Ferrari's with good company.

However, I know you we're being far too polite and didn't really bury the loud peddle completely, even though I was yelling at you not to lift from the cockpit of your lovely 308gt4 behind (write up to come on your other thread but surfice to say at one stage I looked down and the speedo had gone through a 100mph like we were standing still-howls of laughter and rorty V8 filling the car). Next time you know what to do!

Terry, not sure if you can do it in an F1 but if you want to astonish someone in a manual 575M first see how slow you can go in 6th and then as fast as you can go with out changing gears - I have managed sub 20mph to over 190mph. Just make sure you've got loads of room! Amazing engine.

Michael- Not sure where the auto downshifts occur in my F1 Ferrari because mine never auto downshifts. Either I downshift or she is in neutral coming to a stop. Not sure how low she will go in 6th.

Terry, now you are going to have to test it out. How slow can you go (in 6th)??? Actually this could be a new competition - who can go the slowest in top gear.:yikes:

My other little competition (with myself) if I'm going to town for a meeting is see how few gear changes I can get to the city centre in from off my driveway! Must be about 15 plus miles and 20-30 sets of lights. Best effort is 3 so far.:thumbsup:

Those V12s are amazingly flexible, true state of the art engines! In auto mode my Scag very quickly works its way up to sixth on level ground and the gearbox program doesn't deem it necessary to downshift when opening quite some throttle, it just pulls!

Forza Ferrari forever!:crowngrin:

Michael- No, afraid my reflexes would not even allow me to do it. Would break my own rule about auto downshifts, I am sure.

Tomorrow the dream becomes a reality, Barrry, when I fire the bluebird up for the first time. And then drive her the 1,500 or so km from the Netherlands down to Bratislava via Berlin, Dresden, Prague and Vienna in the company of Onno and his magnificent nightbluebird. Our B550 Bomber tour! I am 10 years old again and filled with excitement. The last time I looked forward to my birthday like this must have been 30 years ago.

My first front engined V12 berlinetta. I cannot believe my good fortune!
