I took the Barchetta to the track only once for a few laps with a couple of cars on at the same time.......:yikes:
I know just how you felt, Domenic. I once had my 550 at a PDA (Performance Drivers Association) event at Pocono. I had the only Ferrari there with a bunch of Corvettes, 1980s Mustangs and assorted other stuff. So they were all ganging up on me.

It was like Road Warrior!





If I ever go back to one of those PDA events, it will be in this.... :D

It's good to hear that you had your 575M and Barchetta on the track. There are times on the track that I wish I had a paddle shifter. What would really be neat is a sequential shifter...but that's only a daydream.

Daytona was a 3 day event and I put about 350 miles on the 550 that weekend. My Pilot Sports were in pretty good shape with about 70% tread when I started. This is what they looked like after the event. That's a world record tire booger you're looking at there.

The g-Forces have about 500 track miles and 600 road miles on them and they still look new. I prefer them to the PS2s I have now as far as handling. The g-Forces were also half the cost of the PS2s. Some people don't care for the tread pattern. I kind of like it.

I've never seen another 550 on the track around here, but I've seen a 550 at Daytona. There's one fellow nearby who regularly tracks his 456.

The 575M F1 surprised me. I was keeping up with the seasoned veterans, but I did wear the tires in the front(it's a heavy car as you know).....especially the front right. Rear right took a bit of a beating as well.

I bought a set of those g-Forces for an 08 Z4M I sold this spring and they seem to have a higher wear resistance. They are great value for the money.

Thanks for the first hand information from a seasoned veteran. ;)

I was a little nervous with the Barchetta, but curious just the same; to see how that car handles on the track. I only did a few laps, brought it home and came back with.........my 2002 SVT Ford Focus.......what a blast that little car is!:surprised:

You've got two of the best GT cars ever made. And you've the luxury of choice between manual and F1 to suit your mood. Congratulations!

And you've had a glimpse of the sport car side of the Maranello. Yes, it's a heavy car and you have to think well ahead of where you are on the track. It's slower than some of the other cars on the road course at tracks like Pocono and Daytona, but you quickly catch up and even pass those others on the long straights.

The Maranello suffers from an identity crisis for sure! ;)

Only by the fact that it does so many things well.

Looking at the basic design of the 550, I think with a bit of work you cold turn it into a very impressive track car. Bolt on bigger brakes, drop the ride height, strip all the extra weight off and you would end up with a very quick car.

The stainless torque screws were fun to polish, all 80 of them? Results for time spent, rewarding. Although if I showed you a pic of before and after it would hard be to perceive.

IMO the pictures are not comparable due to lighting and more. After shots were taken with flash in garage. Wheels have about 1000 mi's on them.
The wheels were very nice originally with exception of several pencil lead size/type nicks or scuffs on each.

Condition : Two previous owners and complete maintenance history. It has been well looked after.
European LHD but with MPH (not km/h) as the main scale on the speedometer
Red calipers, red carpets and red stiching on the black leather.
Usual weaknesses, one black key fob, slipping winndows and intially false slow down waarnings which have now disappeared.
I'm currently checking it is up to date with all the AD's.

I didn't know for sure where to post this.
Both the Diablo and the 430 are off the road for the winter and SORN'd. Only the 550 remains street legal. I picked it up from the garage today with a fresh MOT after a 5 week wait for a new shocker. The drive home was a pleasant 100 miles along an undulating English A road. I was pootling along at 25mph in 4th behind a lorry unable to overtake. The oncoming traffic then cleared and the double whites disappeared just as I approached a fairly steep incline. Without thinking I floored it. The car just glided past everything. There was no gear change, no drama. It was completely effortless. I looked down and my speed was a number I wouldn't publish. As I eased off I thought to myself that this must be the most sublime car ever built. Amazing.

decision?

New here, ahem. Anyway, I drove a 550 the other day and it completely blew me away. Tha 12 cyl and gate were so completely differnt as you on this post already know (from the 360/430 F1) My question: 550 or 575 ( if I can find a gated one)? I know, I know, but will I kick myself later? The 550's seem plentiful right now and one can pick color, miles, etc. :cry3:

Bill- Welcome to Ferrari Life. Like Onno said, it does not make much difference which you choose, especially since most 550s have updated the few trouble areas they had with 575 parts. Just find the best Maranello you can, regardless of which it is. I prefer the 575M and really enjoy the F1 system after 50 years of driving three pedal cars. Either car will go a lot faster than is required and both have a ton of torque. Nearly as much as a 7 liter Corvette.

You should go down to member intros below and tell us about yourself.
