It was a respected high-performance tire in its day and I'm sure new ones made today (using modern-tech. rubber compounds) would be just fine performance-wise.
What would be scary is doing high-speed driving on 20+ year old Michelins... The ones on my GT4 were as hard as hockey pucks, I could break traction at any speed with almost no throttle imput. Plus I didn't trust all of those cracks running along the sidewalls.
I wouldn't put inch size tires on metric rims. They are not made for it and they very well could pop off the rim! (or they'd ballon-out so much that they'd stress the rubber and possibly blow).
