This is what happens when service is not performed. this car has 35k notice the nice hole on the side of the block from connecting rod #8 going thru the block,This was due to a connecting rod bearing failure.Notice the engine debris in the intake manifold.
Pretty expensive door stopper now

Elio- They were not changing the oil?

This is an issue with the 430 engines,On my Challenge cars I replace all the crank bearings during an engine refresh at 14000km and we see lots of bearing wear at this point.but on a street car its very important to replace the oil at least every year or 5k or else stuff like this happens.This guy changed the oil 2 times in its life,SO SAD for him

Elio- Ouch, that is why it really cracks me up when owners question the maintenance schedule and want to do less. $200 oil change vs new F430 engine or complete rebuild.

The (ongoing) lack of maintenance is why the cost of ownership is higher than it really should be. A great example of the deferred maintenance plan "in action" is the now prevalent 360 transaxle oil cooler failures. While it may be fun to point fingers at Ferrari for not providing a more aggressive maintenance schedule, the reality is that most of these cars are not seeing enough simple PM, hence the (often expensive) component failures. Any good Ferrari-centric shop knows due to experience what fluids need to be flushed/replaced when.

Whilst the owners might take some of the blame here, one has to wonder about the general European shops that are "comfortable" working on these cars, albeit at much lower rates that the Ferrari shops. I got a call from one a few weeks back looking for an oil filter for a 550. I asked if they were aware that the car used two filters...After a moment of silence, the response was no. I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that a) the filters weren't torqued on and b) presuming the transaxle fluid service was done, the filter/screen wasn't touched.

Elio- That actually sounds like a really good deal to me. What new parts were required or was it just a used engine?

I bought a used engine and replaced all the crank and rod bearings to be on the safe side.the engine had 8k on it and some of the rod bearings had wear on them especially # 8 which was already to the copper at some points. in my experience it is always #8.i think its a flaw in the engine design.i have never seen these issues in the previuos engines,(360,355,348,f40etc)

Elio- Thanks. How easy are those rod bearings to change? Drop the pan and replace, or more involved? First I have heard about the problem and having rod bearing problems at 8K miles is very scary.

its pretty straight forward, but there is no longer an oil pan since it is now a modular engine it requires removing front cover ,camshafts and timing chain and oil sump which is also the crank shaft carrier at the same time.Then the cams have to be re timed. it is a little more time consuming than a 360 or 575 etc.

The Maserati 4200 engines have rod bearings issues as well and show odds wear patterns. The pistons are offset and with such narrow bearings, oiling is critical. Proper oil servicing habits and the highest quality oils are an absolute must.

Elio- Thanks, sounds like a pain, but better done than not. Is the issue oil pressure or something else? On the high performance C2 Corvettes, upgrading to better a better cam and solid lifters meant you needed a higher pressure pump. Wiped a set of bearings before I figured that out, but they were a cinch to change.
