HELLO,

I AM CONSIDERING TRADING MY 1981 308 GTSi W/29k IN VERY GOOD SHAPE BUT, DUE FOR A SERVICE. THE DEAL, A 1990 348 TS W/37K MAJOR SERVICE DONE SUMMER 2005. A NEW CLUTCH, FLYWHEEL SERVICE AND CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER REBUILD DONE THIS PAST OCT 07. THE DEALER WANTS MY 308 ALONG WITH $18,000. I FIGURED I WOULD COME TO THE PEOPLE I KNOW, KNOW THESE VEHICLES THE BEST. IS THIS A GOOD DEAL OR SHOULD I HAVE MY MOTOR REBUILD IN MY 308?

I'm not real "plugged in" to 308 pricing but $18k differance sounds a bit high. Assuming comparable condition, I would expect a 348 to go for about 308 plus 10. This puts it in the range of 45 to 50, 55 for a great one. I'm don't know what a 308 service costs are but I'm betting they are nothing compared to the 348 ($6500 minimum, usually closer to $10000).

Thats the apex of the financial advise I can provide. Now for the asthetic value questions. Whats the benefit of the 348 to you. Do you like the cars performance or appearance better? Is that differance worth $18000 of your hard earned money? They way you wrote, it sounds like your trading up to get out of doing service?

Not sure I said this right. Don't weant to ruffle feathers.

Actually, if you really want a 348 than this may be a good deal for you. Not having seen the cars but just based on my own experiences I figure the 348 TS You are looking at is worth somewhere around $47k while your 308 GTSi is probably worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $25k.

If you have wanted a 348 then I would seriously consider this deal. If, like Saint Bastage says, you are just looking to avoid the service on the 308 then keep the 308. It doesn't need a full engine overhaul, all it needs is a new set of belts, which on the 308 can be done with the engine in the car, and all the fluids changed, from engine coolant to brake fluid to transmission fluid. And a good general going through. You can have your 308brought back up to snuff, for your own use, for less than $2k.

If you are mostly interested in the trade to avoid the service on the 308, then this is not a great deal. All you are buying is a year's cost deferral (the 348 will need a major again in 2009) but probably doubling your long term bill. The belt service is an engine in job on the 308 but is an engine out job on the 348.

No, Its Not About Trying To Avoid The Service On The 308. I Am Making Great Money And Have The Chence To Own A Newer And What I Would Consider A Better Preforming, Looking Model Of Ferrari. I Will Beable To Preform The Service On The 348 In 09. I Am Home Only Less Than 90 Days A Year To Even Drive The 348 So, I Can Hold Off Doing The Service As Often. I Just Want To Makesure I Am Getting A Good Deal In The Long Run. And I Want To Get An Idea What Kind Of Issues I Am Looking At With The 348 Model Of Ferrari. I Notice That The 308 Have A Lot Of Issues Both Minor And Major In Cost And Time.

The 355 Is More Then I Want To Take On. It Will Be Either Keep The 308 And Invest In That Or Invest In The 348 And Go From There.

You made the right choice! Based on current 348 prices, your getting about $30K for your car on trade, if the car is cosmetically at least as good as your trade-in, its a good deal!
The 348 is a great and very solid car... and ALL Ferrari, regardless of what the haters around here say, i'll bet half of them have never owned or even driven one... and you know what they say about opinions!

Since you are away a lot, and the car will just be standing around from time to time the 348 will be a good choice to swap to from the 308. A Danish specialist in Italian cars told me that he had a couple of 348s standing around, and they just start everytime he turns the key. This off course due to the engine management system and injection rather than carburator cars as the 308.
I have just bought myself a 1992 348TS, and can't wait to get it registrered in Denmark - only the registration tax of allmost 61.000 $ (at current exch.rate - NO I am NOT kidding you,! It comes on top of my purchase price of app. 46,000$ ! :mad: ) will keep me waiting another month.

So Good luck with the deal - if it comes through. :)

That sounds very cheap, in the UK a good 308GTSi is going to be at the very least £25k.
One just sold in California a couple of months ago for $25k.

The very high registration tax on cars is the reason for many Ferraris in Denmark just standing around with no license plates - only being used on "test-licenseplates" from time to time.

You can get a refund on the tax when exporting a car - but for some reason the valuation of the car - and therefore the repayment of tax - is lover for exports than for imports. (the tax authorities will not agree to this statement though)

But anyhow, I have allready had the pleasure of meeting some very nice gyus in the Danish Ferrariowners Club - so I am looking forward to this summers events.

Erik, Have car prices dropped in Denmark or have the high tax rates held prices up ?
