Hi all,

I've recently come across a 1986 Euro 328 GTS. The car has been "Federalized" but, seeing as how I live in CA, that's still not going to cut it when it comes to smogging it, I don't think. My question for you fine gents is: Do you know of any "realistic" way to register a car such as this in another state when one is not a resident there? I have a very close friend in the Portland, OR area but if I bought the car and then registered it in his name, wouldn't it then also have to be insured in his name? My other thught would be to purchase the car, open an S-corp, and register the car to the corporation. Any thoughts would be most appreciated. BTW, the car is goinf for 35K and supposedly has just had a major, and has all it books, tools and records.

Hi Scott,

welcome. It's very dangerous to compare laws and rules across oceans but I will say this: my 550 is registered in Holland in my father's name (i.e. all traffic fines go to him ), but it is registered with the insurer in my name. So in Holland those two do not have to be the same, at least with my insurer.

Suggest you contact Mike Sheehan at ferraris-online.com. He should be able to give you advice on what needs to be done to get the car smogged in CA.

Thanks, guys. I think it's too much of a pain in the ass; I've already spoken to the owner of Cavallo Motors in Carlsbad, CA, and it would likely take 3-6k to bring it to spec. With those $ added it would still be a good value IF the rest of the car checked out...but what if it didn't? :-0 Thank you very much for your time and insights/help.

How do you determine a car is a Euro car? My 1984 308QV GTBi is going up for sale within the next couple of weeks and it would be good to be able to answer this question.

Email Ferrari via the Owners Website and they will be able to tell you which market the car was made for.
