Here's a couple pics as a teaser. These are the headers Mark made for the car and the cam blanks he turned and gun drilled at home to be sent to the cam grinder.

The stock TR cams were going to be spinning the wrong direction so Mark had to make new ones. He's doing most of the work himself to keep the cost down. To reduce the cost on the new cams he bought the raw stock and gun drilled the centers at home and cut the blanks to what you see in the pics. He then picked a profile and sent the blanks to a cam grinder that will grind and heat treat the finished cams

It wasn’t a spinning the wrong way issue….it was the wrong firing order. There are basically 2 ways you can do a 2, the 400 is one and the TR the other so the TR cams won’t work with a 400 crank. Had I bothered to do any research and planning BEFORE starting the project I most likely wouldn’t have started

Here’s the drilling, machining in progress, the finished cams, profile comparisons and expected output. The lobes are big..so big the intakes hit the bucket bores, that will need to be fixed.

Here's a couple more pics to catch everyone up. The EDM work on the drop gears and the flywheel Mark made are pretty cool too.

I can't remember? What was the reason for having to weld up the original bores for the new sleeves?

The welding in the pics you posted was to fill in the original head studs holes because the TR heads had a different bolt pattern...that was another one of those things were had I really thought about it I would have cancelled the project.

Then as long as I had to remachine the block anyway I decided to conver it from the 400 and earlier style sleeve that the head compresses against the bottom of the waterjacket to the ater style that clamps the sleeve to the deck becasue they are a lot lighter and the bore stays rounder.....but I had to add a flange. What's a little more welding anyway ;)

I'm still working on the air box. I finished welding the inset plate in, milled the ribs and cleaned it up a little bit. I don't have anything that will sand inbetween the ribs very well.....I'll have to find something.

i'm sorta new to this so this may have been explained in the other thread, but why didn't you just go with a tr or 400 engine? why the hybrid?
It has a lot to do with me be an idiot……

I didn’t like the 400 engine for 2 reasons. First it is a 2 valve and my car is a QV and putting a 2V engine in a QV car just seemed wrong. Second the intakes for the 400 go through the middle of the head which limits flow and limits intake options….the 400 is limited to about 450hp in naturally aspirated trim I think.

I didn’t like the TR engine because it would need to go in with the TR trans which has diff issues and means I would lose the trunk.

The 400/TR hybrid should would better than either of the donors. Last on the list is my car is an ’84 and both 400 and TR engines were available in 1984 so my hybrid engine is period correct.
