Nice car, a pity a lot of 250 GTE and 330 Americas end up being converted into 250 GTO or even 250 TR.

You know, it may sound weir, but I don't really care they destroyed a 250 GTE...
There ar way more of those cars, and if the conversion is done well, so it is a very close replica, you can buy a 250 GTO for less money, and more people can enjoy seeing one. And be honest, if it is a goo conversion, how many people will see that? Offcourse, if you are into s/n etc you will find out it is a replica, but otherwise you will have a very hard job.

RIGHT ON,Dirk!!
The 250 GTE, 365 GTC/4 and 308GT4 are to my opinion the most underestimated Ferraris.
Everyone is talking about the original state of their cars, every bolt and nut need to be the original, in an old Cavalino mag I even read about guys going to Maranello to have their tyres inflated so they would have the right air in their tyres(?????). Yes, a well done recreation of a 250GTO or 250TR can be a nice, even very nice, car, BUT they did have to kill the donor-car, even if it's 'only' a 250GTE. Everywhere you read an interview or talk to one of their owners even these cars are much appreciated and loved. For me, as a collector of serial numbers and history of the cars, it's doesn't bother me if a car is re-done as long as I keep track of it's history. But for the point of view ,for me as Ferrari lover I do think it's a pity another piece of the original is lost.

wich issue of cavallino is that?

and i'll tell you something worse, where you at Spa last weekend?

cuz that fake 250 TR was there again, wich for somebody that knows his cars can easily spot it as a fake, but i FINALLY found out wich s/n it was, last year the owner refused to give it to me, but now i saw the hood open
and THEY USED A BOANO FOR THAT
there where only 64 Boano's build and they are 2-3 times more valuable then a GTE

Dirk,
besides, another rebodied Boano turned up on several occasions at Francorchamps: 0827 GT rebodied as a Tour de France!

Now the $ 100.000 question is: what do we call these cars? Recreations, rebodies, fakes???

Fakes for us, yes. I suggest 're-creation' as one would try to sell one.(or tries to explain his wife he wants to buy one!)

The body isn't exactly the most important part of the car. The engine/drivetrain/suspension is. The original 250 GTOs would be fake too, cause I bet almost every one crashed bad and had a (partly) new body. So then you have a car that is half fake? :-?

there's a difference
those where rebuild and raced by the factory or by teams at the team

these are cars that had there original bodywork taken off, in a lot of cases still good bodyworks, 20-30 years later and another "new" one placed on

So because they are raced they are not fake bodies? When mr Kroymans crashes his GTO it goed to mr Hietbrink, and I bet he doesn't put bodywork on that car from the factory. So when the car was originally a GTO, the body is correct, and when it was a Boano the body is fake?

good point,
I think there's another thing to think about. If a 250 GTO is rebodied after a crash with it's original style body, it's still a 250 GTO. What's the idea behind putting a 250 GTO style body on a crashed 250 GTE? Being hooked on a 250 GTO without the funds to buy a real one? OR:Building a 'fake' GTO on a 250 GTE base thinking about how much more one can get by selling it instead of a original style bodied GTE?
As for the 250 GTO's. I don't think there are much of them around now in 100% original state; indeed a lot of them were rebodied after a crash, engines travelled the world around being in other cars, afterwards rejoined with their original car, modifications were made for Historical Races (evenso as the 375MM and his rollcages see other topic), safety belts added, fire extingiushers added, engines modified to unleaded fuel,...They stay 250 GTO's.
How much or what needs to remain of the original car so it can be considered original I can't say, even the leading judges on international concours don't have an unanimous opinion.

fake or not fake

I believe Ferrari cars is all about beauty and fun which in turn give us the happyness in our life.
If the s/n numbers turns you on and you proud and having fun with it. That's ok. The fake 250GTO we are talking about, looking so great, stop your heart from pumping and we are still talking about s/n number. During the 50's and 60's, Even the Ferrari Factory itself altered their cars when they were brought in to factory for repairing. The 250 Bradvan was not looking like that to begin with. and many other examples. I read about this guy converted his Datsun 240z to the Ferrari 250GTO and he is more happy than ever. If he can only imagine that it is real he save himself $10 million or the hard work to get $10 million and have the same level of happyness as the guy who own the real one. It all about happyness, I believe.
