Tim, its a long story, you see, this car in the beginning was never meant to be a Ferrari....
At the dawn of the '70's, Fiat were planning to replace their Fiat Dino Coupe (2.4L V-6, Bertone-design). Since Ferrari were using Fiat to build the V-6 engines (in the beginning with the 206, to get into 2 litre-based formula racing), this close tie between Fiat and Ferrari now had them producing the evolution of the V-6, the 3 litre V-8. It gets complicated, but Fiat cancelled the project deeming it wasn't profitable to have an expensive car in the line-up. Naturally with Enzo Ferrari having an early say in the project as he was building the motor from the ground-up, the car was then handed over to Ferrari (this was good timing for them, as they needed a replacement for their 246 GT, to compete against the new Porsche 911, Lamborghini Uracco and Maserati Merak, all high-performance 2+2's). The project went forth to the design stage, Fiat already had called in Bertone to design this new coupe but now with Enzo Ferrari's suggestions on interior design and layout.
The car was sold first with Dino badges as it was that, a Dino replacement. Sales at first were poor, that's why they then stuck Ferrari badges on them. In the six years this car was produced, over 2800 of them were made, which at THAT time, was the most Ferrari had made of any model.
I will eventually show pictures of my engine-rebuild here...
