Andrew,
You can actually read and write in this language? I'm impressed!

I think something went wrong with the Japanese section of the site, or maybe we got another hacker... I sent Andrew a mail, I discovered it when he should be asleep, so I guess he will read it when he wakes up

Bob,

I can read a tiny bit but I am starting to lose it now that I don't live there anymore. I could read signs that I saw daily and knew what the characters meant. For example river (gawa) was used a lot. Also there are three alphabets in Japan, I can read two of them.

There are tons of cool Ferraris in Japan and I hope some will visit here.

Can only, slightly anymore, read the old conji...as it resembles pre-modern Chinese. But like you, loosing it, and well, was a 3rd grade reader even in High School.

It is unfortunate I could never get this section off the ground given all the awesome cars in Japan. I'd love to see owners posting photos of their Ferraris in Japan. However, I notice that in general forums are not popular there at all. China is another story. Forums are abundant in that country, Ferraris not so much (for now).

That's too bad and surprising too. I know many GT4's were sold there new, some have come and gone, but still many around. Out of all of the years I've been running my GT4 Registry, I have only been contacted by two japanese GT4 owners and it was only because they could write in english (and so they could easily find my site)...

I thought about doing a multi-lingual version of my site and can do some text using Babelfish*, and hopefully include japanese-charactered keywords in my meta tag to attract japanese search engines (do japanese search engines look for english-based websites?).

* = It works, somewhat, as if I put english text, translate to japanese then translate that back into english, it is quite fractured and at times incomprehensible. I've used it before to write to german, italian and french owners and they've replied they could clearly understand what "I" wrote ;) . So is the Japanese language structured in a completely different manner, more than in a way French/Italian/Spanish is compared to english?

If you Google in Japanese, it usually display the sites in Japanese only. I just tried and a couple of English sites came up but they were only YouTube and flickr. I haven't seen any Japanese owners in English forums. It's to do with the language, I guess.

Japanese language is structured in a totally different way. Surprisingly, I've heard that Turkish is very similar in terms of structure.

EDIT: I just re-checked and found this site came up 6th on the list in Japanese.

When I lived in Japan I actually had the site translated into Japanese. I also had a domain for it, just never seemed to get users.

Just had a look over this thread again: Nice invite Andrew, but I'm thinking you'll be hard pressed to get the casual user here: UNLESS you start posting you-know-who's collection and now his one-off PF car. :D

There are so many amazing Ferraris in Japan. My hope was that they would post in their native language here. We would see the cool photos, have no idea what they were saying but still enjoy getting some exposure to it, and maybe the more adventurous would post in the English areas too.

As Jimmy said, the island mentality is strong. But what I noticed is Japan in general uses (or did) the internet very differently. You won't even find many Japanese forums and this software doesn't have a Japanese translation, whereas they have just about all the other languages of the world (volunteers generally translate it).

Normally I'd ask, "Well, where's the rest of it?" but it wouldn't do me any good.

One thing I notice about Japan when I'm there, is how beautifully clean it is. The cars that aren't here in the states intrigue me. I wish the exotic groups would share on Ferrari Life with the rest of the world! What a great backdrop for these cars
