2014 Fair Lakes, VA Cars & Coffee (Kohl's)

For reference purposes, here's the link to the 2013 Fair Lakes C & C thread...

http://www.ferrarilife.com/forums/us...-lakes-va.html

Today, 1/12/14, was the first clear weekend day of the year. Icy roads, plus sand- and salt-covered roads kept people away the first weekend of the year. This past week, single-digit temperatures, as well as snow, sleet and freezing rain in the DC region had many of us wondering when we'd ever have a decent weekend day for a C & C. This was that day. Clear skies and early morning temperatures rising quickly from the high 30's into the high 40's proved to be too good for many of us to resist.

The Corvette guys led the way, and we even had four 90's-era ZR-1's in attendance. (No Italians today, though...)

Well, all the salt that was on the streets Saturday somehow disappeared. Oh, wait - it's coating my car's wheel wells. Clear skies and streets brought out a good amount of people and cars today.

People like the later start of this Cars & Coffee - we don't get under way until between 8:00AM - 8:30AM on Sundays, and a fair amount of folks stay until 11:00AM. See what turned out today. Hats off (but gloves on) to the guy the arrived on a BMW motorcycle, and his friend who had the TR6 with the top down!

Bobert and his wife dared the elements in F550 and GT350H.

A cold morning, with remnants of snow and salt everywhere. You'd think that this Cars & Coffee would be a bust.

Far from it! We had a pretty good turnout, with an interesting mix of cars, and lots of enthusiastic people.

Fair Lakes - 02/02/14

Clear skies and moderate temperatures (for early February) brought a lot of folks out. Most of the snow was gone, and what salt was still on the roads presented less of a problem.

Cold and cloudy, but no precipitation, and (at least early), no breeze. Plenty of nice cars and hardy owners. Not much in the way of exotics, though.

On the Prowler, I had never noticed the repetition of the oval dashboard feature, through the oval rear window.

It's the silver level wash that gets the salt off the undercarriage boys!

HAHAHA! Just giving you guys a hard time. Hope you are having fun out there but can't wait for Winter to be over. What a cold, crappy winter for car guys...

Fair Lakes - Snow Day - 02/16/14

From time to time, I think we all wonder about what goes on in familiar places when we are not around. It's the basis for 'if a tree falls in a forest, does it make a sound', as well as the idea behind those anthropomorphized (Google it) cows in 'The Far Side' comics. It was this same curiosity that made me go over to Fair Lakes this morning, despite the fact that there were snow banks on the roads and parking lots, well over 5 ft. tall. I drove my 'bad weather' car, and got there late - 10:00AM. Also, I didn't bring my good camera - after all, who would be there on a day such as this? I found out - lots of people! Surprisingly, not just the 4WD variety.

The weather certainly eliminates real exotics, but I'm glad to see some people enjoying the snow.
Kudos, though, to the guys who brought out their RWD cars!

Hey Bob,

That's a GREAT shot of the 4x4's climbing the snow banks! Thanks for your continued coverage of the Fairlakes Cars and Coffee and your wonderful photos!!

Thanks, Bill - I'd have preferred my camera to my phone, but glad to have something...

Apparently, there was a new Ghibli there earlier. (Sorry, but I don't think the name 'Ghibli' should be used for a big 4-door. I love the original.

The mid-winter doldrums - people responded to the relatively warm temps, and fairly clean roads.

First picture - Fair Lakes Rule #1: Don't park under the 'goose bleachers'.

Lots of people & cars, and a good variety. The second picture is the 430 Scuderia that left as I got my camera out. He got there early, but left early, too. I even let Bobert park his F355 next to my Elise. (Damned nice of me, huh?)

The last picture is of a 944 with a Chevy LS1 installed.

When I left the house this morning, the temperature was 40 degrees, which was 23 degrees warmer than yesterday. Because the forecast is for rain this afternoon, followed by possibly heavy snow tonight and tomorrow, lots of people decided they needed to come out.

Kevin had the only Ferrari there today, but we did have a Gallardo and a Maserati.

At this point, after all the snow and cold, a clear day - even a pretty cold one - is a reason to celebrate. Today's turnout was a good one.

The prospect of still MORE snow this afternoon/evening/tomorrow brought out a lot of people.
We had three Ferraris in attendance today.

That's a snow pile, well over 10' tall, next to the multi-story parking lot, adjacent to the Cars & Coffee lot.

A cold, bitter, windy day, but at least no rain/sleet/snow. (That's what passes for 'Cars & Coffee' weather this winter in the Northern Virginia area.) Three Ferraris in attendance, including the yellow 599 GTO I missed at Katie's yesterday.

A cool, clear morning brought out a real crowd. The third picture is piles of snow next to our parking lot, left over from snowstorms 3 or more weeks ago. Some of these piles are still well over 3 feet tall.

Sure thing - here's the ACR pic I didn't post. Dino's is a Hennessey 800 Twin Turbo.

Some people just don't come out unless the weather is perfect. Today was that day. The first picture shows the lot at 8:24AM today.

The Mondial guys came out, and were joined by a 599 GTO.

What a showing! Easter Sunday, and more people than I dreamed of were there.
FOW brought out an F12 Berlinetta. Having read about this model, I was fascinated to look at the various aerodynamic bits. We were also fortunate to have an F550 there to compare two models, 15 years apart. I looked up specs, and here's the difference 15 years make:

F550
5.5L V12 (87hp/liter)
479hp
VMax 199mph
0-60 4.3 sec

F12
6.3L V12 (115hp/liter)
730hp
VMax 211mph
0-60 3.1 sec

Some things I find fascinating - all that extra power, and all the aerodynamics only result in 12 more mph, top-end. I know that it requires massive HP to increase top speed, and this shows that. (Gear ratios may also play into this.) Also, note that the 550 has a nice air scoop on the hood. The F12 manages the air over, under and around the hood. The F12's rear diffuser is immense and complex. Very cool!
