In the earlier days, he was a hard working guy that helped his family run and then eventually sell some very successful local businesses. It was a common thing to see him busing tables or mopping during busy working hours. The whole family was generous in giving to local charities and participating in (good) business back-scratching. It's what endeared the guy to all of us and was really cool to see an owner who was still willing to get down and dirty every day.
At some point though, he hooked up with some less than savory people and made a very quick downward spiral. Aside from the sources of the cash, he contracted a lot of custom work from a lot of local shops. Some got paid, but some were simply counting on getting paid since up to about 3-4 months before "the end" there were never any issues. Hundreds of thousands of dollars to some pretty small shops.
Greed is a bad bad thing.
