john 308 Top End Tapping Noise

Help just started my car 308 gts carb after sitting for 8 months top end knock started after about a min sounds like a sticking hydraulic tappet on a car with hydraulic tappets can any of you guys shed some light on the matter thanks

John- Welcome to Ferrari Life. Do not know what you are hearing, but the 308s do not have hydraulic lifters/tappets. Those did not arrive until the F355 and 550 were introduced in the mid-90s. Valve clearance is adjusted by removing and replacing shims of the correct thickness to get the desired clearance and hydraulic pressure is not involved.

Is the noise a tapping or more of a heavy knock and did it stop? If it stopped, something was starved for oil after the 8 months of drain down and drying out and finally got enough oil to quiet it down.

I agree. Starved for oil or lub. After a healthy ride, try it again next morning. If persists, probably something clogging in there.

thanks for your reply gents no i just ment it sounded like a hydraulic tappet i have since removed the engine hood and back cam cover the timming marks are spot on tomorrow i will remove front cover and check timming marks just praying that it hasnt jumped teeth and bent a valve i.
Ionly had it on tick over and it started no problem so i will keep you up to date gents and once again thanks fpr your replies cheers guys john

Hi again gents front bank exhaust camshaft jumped two teeth checked down bore with endoscope couldnt see any damage put two new belts and tensioners on under recomendation from a ferrari mechanic and she started no rattling so just have to connect everything back up and run her up to temp and see what happens still havent ruled out bent valves although all tappet clearances were wiyhin spec keep you posted gents.

You are very lucky to escape without bent valve. How old where the cambelts?

additionally , did you freeze the cams or did you degree them again . those marks for only meant from the factory if I recall . not to be trusted . sounds like you may know what you're doing but a proper tune up might be in order .
