Heads up: Engine & tranny out of 400i F/S

All y'all wanting to do a V12 project:

Ferrari V12 Engine and Transmission from 1983 400i Motor | eBay

And it's even torn down already for you!

Too bad it's only the 2v engine, but I'm sure Mark could help you figure out how to convert it to 4v heads

'99 550, Rosso Corsa / Nero, S/N:114654, Assy: 31836, Engine: 52084

High mileage, low compression, and missing on a few cylinders.....just like my cars.

John, are you trying to ruin my marriage?!?!?

I'm worried that you're searching ebay for stuff that I normally expect only Mark and I delusionally delve into...

I'm as nuts as you guys - I just don't have the tools or the workshop space to get into real serious trouble.

Someone needs to buy this and swap it into a mid-engined V8. It simply has to be done.

I see great engines that get made into tables and I hate that. It's an admission that you can't handle the responsibility and have no idea what to do with it.

Although I understand where you're coming from, I'm not sure many would qualify this engine as one of the greats. It would probably look much more attractive cleaned up and brought down to the basic components as a table than covered in dirt and clutter in a 400i.

Plus, you really don't know the condition it's in. It was pulled for a reason despite the seller shrugging that off in his ad. A lot of coffee table engines weren't economically feasible to fix. Worn bores, stuck damaged studs, etc.

But, I will agree that it's a bit of a shame when someone uses a good one.

I'd love to hear about them if you have the time. Are there certain issues with the basic engine or is it all the stuff attached to it? I assume oil filter changes are one issue but that's just a guess ;-)

Someone who wants to make a small fortune (and has a large fortune to start with )

This one was on eBay the other day, but it looks like it's gone already. Would've loved to put this in a glass case and just admire it.......

The oil filters are indeed a nightmare

They are gutless, installed in very heavy cars and then covered in 70's era efforts to control emissions which make them quite annoying to work on. The 400i isn't much of a pleasure to drive or service. The engine would be more appreciated as a decorative piece where you can actually see it and admire it.

Ahhh, I wish. I'm afraid those days are over for me. Or, more to the point, for the Mrs. Sigh.

I can see my V12 budget fading away...
