308 gas leak...scary!

Today, I went on a long December ride...a great day for a ride. When I got my 1985 308 GTS QV back into the garage, I noticed gas dripping from under the left corner back quarter panel, just in front of the back wheel. It stopped within a couple of minutes; however, when I fired it up again, it began leaking. Any ideas?

Thanks

I wouldn't start the car again, too dangerous if there is a gas leak. The left back panel as you know is below where you put the gas in, so there maybe a leak in the tank or seal in that area.

See if you can't get it towed to your mechanic.

Hello

I experienced a similar thing with my 1986 328 but on the opposite side to the fuel cap. The leak (or drips as they were) did not occour everytime nor if the tank was full. It was usually when cold. I left it with my Ferrari specialist who kept the car for a week. Eventually it started to drip again and it turned out to be a very tiny hole in a fuel pipe. An over flow pipe if I remeber correctly which is why it didn't leak everytime.

GOOD LUCK

Gas leaks are becoming more common on the 308's. Don't forget all these cars are now over 20 years old. The rubber hoses have been soaked in gasoline longer than most college graduates have been alive and they are starting to degrade. It's amazing they've lasted this long.

Sounds like you've got a hole in the hose on the output side of the fuel pump. It wouldn't be a bad idea to go ahead and change all the fuel hoses on the car.
