The Red 1-4 slowdown light on a 355

Hey everyone,

I know this has been talked about a few times, but I have a question. After start up yesterday the Red 1-4 slowdown light came on, now the car wasn't even close to the normal temp. After the car was at normal temp. the light went out. So it has to be a sensor right? There is no way the Cat. could have been that hot yet.

After seeing that I didn't want to go to far from home just in case, so I drove around the neighborhood, everything seemed fine. So I was off to my friends who was about 30 miles away. Then about 10 miles into the trip, the light came on again this time I was on the freeway in a construction zone going about 65 mph. With no way to stop or slow down, I was getting alittle worried. The construction zone was about another 8 miles long. The light stayed on the hole way. As I was getting out of the constuction zone and looking to pull off on the next exit, the light went out.

The car was fine the rest of the way, and all the way home. So my question is. If the light stays on and I keep driving it will this cause any damage?

I will have it looked at, but just wanted everyones thoughts.

Similar issue on my 348...happens everytime I waterwash the car...still trouble shooting but best guess is the water from a wash gets hung up in the cat shield and flashes to steam causing the issue. I don't waterwash anymore. No problem driving like that. Electronics shut down that bank of cylinders if temp is too high (indicator will flash). Limp mode sucks, but its better than the alternative. BTW, "No Problem" does not mean disregard. Figure it out ASAP.

It could be a number of things ranging from the Cats going bad, problem with the manifolds, ecu failing, bad spark plug, to simply a loose connection. I would get it looked at asap.

Vegas,

Most likely your TC sensor is giving bad readings to your ECU. Switch it with the other one (5-8) and see it that one acts up, if it does? Voila. As far as driving with the light on, well that’s your choice, if you’re pushing the car and it goes on, I would pull over just in case but since it went on when you started it, most likely you have a TC going bad. If you switch the TC’s around, and the 1-4 light comes on again…..time to start looking at plugs/wires or any other loose connections. Then, if your mechanically inclined, check the left bank cat, could be broken inside and causing restrictions. If your not mechanically inclined…get it checked out. The ECU would be the last thing I would replace due to price.

Hey Vegas! Grats on your new baby, you finally pulled the trigger.

Anyhow, I'm sorry to hear about your slow down warning light. As someone earlier had mentioned, it might just be the TC sensor. There are 2 sensors located in the each of the left and right catalysts, exactly what both does I had forgotten what my mechanic said. If it were true that you were overheating your cats, then a signal would shut your cylinders / and or would go into limp mode.

My left cat went on me and am scheduled to have both replaced with hyper-flows this coming january since its a bit expensive. The only indicator I had was the check engine light. Otherwise I still drive it around, but not on long trips or if I knew I would be stuck in traffic.

Hope that helps, and drive it like you mean it.

Thanks for the input. I took it out yesterday just to see if it would come on again. No light. I'll still have it looked at just to be safe. Here are some pictures I took the other night.

Oh c'mon Pete, do you really believe that Magnum and I couldn't guess that was a '68 Camaro SS with a 396 just by seeing a picture of half a headlight? The list in Vegas-Guy's signature just confirmed what we suspected.

Freakin' Sweet, Dude!!!!! That's a show car there! Beautiful car.

Here's a fun comparison - 396 cubic inches is 6.5 liters. The engine in my Ferrari is 3.0 liters. The engine in the 355 is 3.5 liters.

Vegas, you just gave me inspiration for my next car after I build another 2 car garage next my home.

I am thinking of picking up the same one as the car in that show with Nicolas Cage called "Eleanor" I believe. It was a 67' Stang GT. Hopefully I get it pretty much stock so I canput some work towards it.

ps

very nice looking camaro, very clean engine, I like the chrome job you did and the HT wires.
