308 GTB Drive

I took the 308 GTB out for a drive late yesterday afternoon. What a great drivers car. It really is comfortable, agile, and a pleasure to drive. It may not be amazingly quick by todays standards (but neither is a Daytona, Dino, Boxer, or Testarossa) but it still has plenty of power to tackle both the hills and highway. I ran it a bit into 3 digit territory on an empty highway and the engine just sang. On the twisty stuff, the balance once you have built a bit of speed is near perfect and the 308 flows through the corners very smoothly. Once you are used to the balance, you can steer it with the right foot and a bit of lock. The tail is well mannered. The gearbox is well a Ferrari gearbox. Get it down and it is fast and accurate. I really enjoy running 2-3-4 with the metal clank in the hills. It does not feel fragile and seems to ask to be driven hard. Net net, really had fun.

IMHO, a well sorted 308 is highly recommended. Unlike other models, this one just continues to grow on me.

I feel just the same about my 328. When I bought it 18 months ago, the intention was to trade up to a 355 in a couple of years. Now I couldn't bare to sell it. When I buy another Ferrari it will have to be in addition to the 328.

LOL. Problem is I have to persuade my wife that we don't really need to trade up to that big non estate house she always dreamed of so that I can have the funds for another Ferrari. I am working on it, and the other problem is which model to go for next time, 512 TR, 550, 575, 355 or 360 ?

Have you driven a 512 BB or 512 BBi ?

The 512 BB was always my dream car as a young boy in the 70's. I never saw the attraction of the Countach (ugly armour plated pre historic looking - a bit like a Hummer) I would still love to own a 512 BB, but I'm put off buying one as I don't know how reliable, useable and comfortable it would be. I have read the buyers guides on here, and I seem to remember something about the cabin can get incredibly hot. It would probably end up sitting in storage for months on end. I want a car I can drive regularly and not worry too much about it breaking.
Another car I have always wanted is a 355, but after seeing your NART blue 360 it's made me look at the design in a different light now. I've seen too many rosso 360's and I don't think the colour suits the shape.
The other dilema is 8 or 12 cylinders, good TR's have bottomed out at £35K ish, and 550's are heading that way. If I can get a good 550 for under £40K in a year or two, I might just go for it, I prefer the look to the TR.

The 360 will be more fun to drive on the Saturday B road blast than the 550. The 550 is better for crossing Europe. I doubt 550's will drop below GBP40k (at least one you would want to buy).

Where do you think 360's will bottom out? I'm guessing at £35-40K at 10 -15 yrs old, but only because that's where 355's are heading.

Back to your original post, is the 308 a 4 or 5 spd?

I don´t see 360s going that low. My guess is GBP 40-50k.

The 308 GTB is a 5 speed, but I never use 5th in the twisty stuff. Only on the highway when cruising.

So good to hear that you're enjoying your 308, Boxer. Although I have never had the opportunity to drive one, IMHO, all those midship Ferraris that started from Dino all the way thru the successive 3x8s are exactly FUN cars. Part of the reasons I believe are the fact that their scales are much more to the human scale and without all kinds of high tech stuffs that seems to make the driving thrills more detached. Besides, Boxer, I'm sure it is a wonderful contrast to the opposing F40 in your garage. (Just a tinge of envy ?). It's wonderful to hear your driving experiences. I'm sure we're all looking forward to your "reports". Jimmy

I agree with Jimmy, I'm always waiting to read about your experience with your ladies hehehehehe and sometimes if it takes too long for you to post a new one, I just have to read once more about the F40 crossing Europe =)

and archie, I wouldn't recommend another Ferrari to your garage, considering how many miles you drive the 328

do it like Boxer: take the car out, get that engine to the high revs, eating the road like it was meant to be!

and then buy a 550 (I prefer the F355, but in your case I think it would be a little redundant, since you'll keep the 328)

If one day I do buy another Ferrari, I guarantee it will be for driving not to gather dust in my garage.
The problem I've had this year is that the weather has been so bad in the UK, hence I've not taken it out as much as I'd have liked. The other issue with my 328 is that it's such a low mileage car (21K in 18 yrs) I've been reluctant to start putting too many miles on it and compromising it's resale value. So I'm only driving it 10 miles every saturday to keep everything working.
The next Ferrari will be a drivers car that I can take to work and am not afraid of piling the miles on, I'll buy a higher mileage car next time so it won't be an issue.

I had thought about the fact that putting too many miles on my '82, now with 20K would lower the resale value, BUT I don't think I will ever want to sell it because: I like the Berlinetta more than the Spyder and I like Black, and I haven't seen another black Berlinetta for sale in some time, and certainly not one as good as mine, SO..........I think I will always have my 308, meaning that there's no such thing as putting on too many miles!!! I love driving it, and I am just rinsing it off from last nights ride so I can take it out to lunch today!! Of course, I appreciate all the improvements of the 348,355 cars, but I don't think the gigantic improvement came until the 360, so I believe that the prices of 360s will always be higher than the 355s, unless someone loves the "older" cars so much more! If I were REALLY a rich guy, I'd have the whole series, 246/308/328/348/355/360/430 and a few V12s as well, I do love the F cars!!! Ciao, Dennis in Winnipeg

I'm a much more modest guy, if I had the 288 GTO + F40 + F50 + Enzo I'd be very happy already hehehehehe

and I agree with you about the miles issue: if you plan to keep the car, DRIVE IT like if there was no tomorrow hehehehe the lost of value won't be your problem, because you'll never sell it anyway, so let the person that gets the car after you pass away worry about that

Drive, enjoy, it is better for both the owner and the car. The value of the enjoyment of the drive will far out weight an hit you take in the potential resale value. FYI, I have put 5000 km on the F40 in the last year.

Boxer, I know what you are saying is right. I think I'm suffering from first time Ferrari owner syndrome, a bit like when you have your first child, you don't want to do anything that might harm it, so are over protective. By the time you have your second you realise that they are tougher than you thought and being over protective can do more harm than good.

TBH the resale value shouldn't be an excuse as I don't have any plans to sell it.

I think the only cure is to buy another Ferrari ASAP I love your 360. As it's a left hooker, I'll give you £40K for it
