348 SS serial number issue

Any of you fancy yourselves as numbers guys. I'm looking at joining the fraternity by purchasing a 348 SS. The problem is that the VIN plate says the car was produced in October 1992. My understanding is that the SS version was introduced at the LA car show in December of 1992 as a 1993 model only. How could number 98 of 100 be built prior to introduction. Could this be a fraud?

My records show the SS as a '92 model so this would fit the above plate. Where did you see it was a '93 model?

I've seen 1993 referenced in numerous places. Most recently in the attached 348 references.

Excuse me while I take my foot out of my mouth.

My next answer is that the build date is the date the was conceived not born. So in Oct of '92 they started the car and it rolled off the floor in '93. It is also common for models built late in one year to be considered model year the following.

I doubt those plates are frauds.

You might ask what his build date reads, when I find his username I'll post it here.

I'm not sure about Ferrari in particular but most manfuacturers are very helpfull over the phone. I have called numerous times to check on recalls and such when shopping pre-owned vehicles and they have been very helpful. Give Ferrari NA a try.

I'm waiting for the return call now. Got to admit I feel much better now that Enzo250GTO has redefined that as a "concieved" date. In addition, I have sent an Email to the #64 owner. Turns out his is for sale.....Hmmmm...This could get interesting.....Restore a mildly neglected SS or buy a perfect one????

Generally getting a well maintained car is better on the pocket book, a bit more upfront but less over the course of ownership.

To close the thread...I spoke with a Ferrari rep. He confirmed the car as a Serie Speciale concieved on 10/22/1992 and delivered in September of 1993. The plates are correct. I'm very happy to report that this SS is for real.

I wonder if that indicates any notable time-to-completion. Since most of those were pre-sold, it is interesting that such a gap exists from inception to birth: almost as long as humans
