F355 Cambelt Change Techniques

Earlier this week I was talking to two different mechanics, one official Ferrari and the other independant. The 1st insisted that pullng the engine was the best method for changing the belts as it allowed you to better inspect and clean everything in the engine bay. The second, who drops the fuel tanks and changes the belts in-situ, made a point that to pull the engine you had to disconnect/reconnect everything which added unneed complexity, time, and cost to the process.

While the 1st method would seem to offer the most through (and expensive) job, I am not sure the logic of needing to pull the engine out to do everything right holds. When you consider that the 360 and 430 were designed to allow the belts to be changed without removing the engine, if a method can be found to do the same on the F355, why not ?

if it was my 355, I would do it without removing the engine

when you disconnect and reconnect stuff, you're given an oportunity to do something wrong

leave it where it is and you will not have that chance to mess up

absolutely..removing the engine is just a rip off, not to mention the scuff marks..oops, we are soooo sorry...there are items called "mirrors" which can be used to inspect things (small mirrors on telescopic extensions, flexible, etc.), things like good torches to shed light, etc.
Most mechanics seem to be stuck in the stone ages and don't use their heads, all we are dealing with is effectively a steam engine which is powered by gasoline and it makes a lovely roaring sound we all love..but it's pretty basic stuff..mechanics love exaggerating, because evry 10 minutes they talk to you, they can get an extra 300-500 oout of you !

Back when I owned an F355, I had the engine pulled for the cambelt change.

I also had the engine pulled when I did the belts on the 308 GTB this year. This was due to wanting to have it pulled apart and everything inspected (it was the 1st time I was getting it serviced in my ownership) so that I would have a complete picture of the cars condition.

I would say pull it out for the first time to inspect everything and get a sound mind about the condition of your car. Next time do it the easier way.

Do let us know how it goes when you take the F50 in. I know the suspension is actually above the engine correct? I would be curious to see that work done.

It's pretty cool. My car is a bit different in the way it comes out, but none the less it's good we have a DIYer in here!

The F50 does not have cambelts so no need to ever pull the engine.
