Air box insulation?

Hey Guys,

So, I'm having air boxes powder coated and the lower half of the box has a grill and under it is a fiber glass insulation (at least it feels like fiber glass). Well, that is not on the parts diagram and I don't know it's purpose.

I'm looking to replace it and will likely just get some fiberglass insulation (hi temp), white.

Does anyone know the purpose and a source? I should have taken a photo but I did not.

Thanks in advance

Mine has the same stuff that's in great condition....few insects caught up in it though

Btw......do you know why the exhaust hangars have the steel mesh stuff stuffed inside their springs?
What's the purpose of this?

Likely for sound dampening

Dave looks like ceramic cloth

Put a match to it see what it does

If its ceramic I have about 100 lbs of it. We use it to insulate 2000 degree ovens

Would this stuff make better acoustical insulation for the inside of a muffler in place of high temp Fiberglas and stainless steel wool? IE, would it hold up longer?

Yes it works most excellent for that also

I modded my tubi and put some in. The stuff in the tubi was not as heat tolerant. You can see it turns to stone after some good heat.

My understanding of how Fiberglas breaks down in a muffler is because it slowly disintegrates from the constant exhaust pulses beating on it over time. Would this stuff break down the same way? Do you know if it would it be more resistant to this problem than Fiberglas?

Yes, I understand that. I was asking if the ceramic withstands breakdown better than Fiberglass.
