Paint

Thought I ould ask everyone their opinion on automotive paint. I recently had my bumper resprayed and am not happy with the job. My painting skills are limited but it was supposed to be base clear, however the clear seems so thin my pressure washer could peel it off.

I now need to do it again and wanted thicker clear. I was told that thicker clear will oftain spider web or crack. My experince is the last state, ent about cracking is bs.

What about thicknesses. If a person was repainting how thick should the new base clear be?

I did not see the othernthread you guys could ignore this if its a repeat.

Grant, with modern urethanes, clear can be reasonable thick but it's not all that necessary.

You want enough thickness to wet sand and buff. A clear coat of .004"-.008" is a good range.

Thanks Dave. You got me thinking i can just measure the paint on bumper and prove if its thin. If its thin they can redo it. If not that crap I went through was worse than i thought. Probably the fairest way to rate the paintjob i guess.

My $1100 paint meter will only measure thickness on ferrious and non ferrious metals. I belive you need another special meter to measure over plastics.

Ah crap. Thanks Dave as usual your the man. I think i am going to buy the smoker first. Only so much in the budget o ya forgot Stickies first, smoker, than paint gauge.

Actually i will probably have to paint bumper first, then rest because I Hate seeing the bumper like that. Oh well its only money and I keep telling myself I dont spend much on booze.

Thanks again.
