Does this look normal?

So I need to replace a torn axle boot, right side inner. As you can see the tear is pretty bad. Surprisingly most of the grease is still in the joint. Not much flung around the surrounding areas.

Also, there is no grit in the grease in the joint. I'm thinking I need to just replace the boot but 2 things.

I recently noticed a popping noise, usually when engaging the clutch in first gear (maybe reverse too) usually during slow speed maneuvering. It sounds like what you'd hear on a front wheel drive vehicle with shot cv joint.

I jacked up the car, removed the wheel, and tried sliding the axle shaft in and out, and it seems to move a lot. I took some videos. Please have a look and tell me what you think.

Neil,

I've tried to play your videos but I only get sound (tried on IE and Firefox same results)

As I recently removed the axles of my 95 - I do recall that they have movement inline of the axle center line.

Axial play tells little with regards to condition. Disassemble the joint and visually inspect it for wear. If there's a problem, it will be obvious.

LOL - I just did it from my phone too and it worked. Let me check my axles when I get home and I'll see if I have the same amount of play. But, my boots are still on and not torn so then my minimize the play.

Regardless, do as Dave said and clean them up and inspect.

Neil changed mine last year and they looked similar. As Dave from fluentin says i checked mine after cleaning and everything seemed ok. Greased and put back together and 5000 miles later still no problems.
