1985 308 QV

HI all,

I am new to Ferrari ownership and to this forum.

I recently bought a 1985 308 QV in Blu Sera Metallico. A beautiful car if I do say so myself.

Anyway, the car is supposed to be all original. What i am trying to find out is whether the bead of what appears to be sealant or some kind of gasket that starts where the rear windows end and ends where the rear engine cover closes, is a normal factory thing or some kind of repair.

I am going to attempt to attach photos of both sides of the car to illustrate.
I would greatly appreciate any guidance on this matter as i am worried about it.

Thanks,
Andy

308 QV

Hi all,

I am going to try the picture attachments again. The old files were too big.

Thanks for helping,

Andy

PS: I was only able to add one pic. For some reason the other side's file is still too big. In any case, it's the exact same thing on both sides.

Weird. It's not like that on my 308. Although on my 308 the paint is starting to crack along that seam. Perhaps the paint on yours is cracked also and the previous owner ran a bead of black caulk along to cover it up. Does it look OK? From the photo it doesn't looks like it stands out too bad.

Hey all,
I have a Euro 85 308GTS QV, original paint , and I have exactly the same
black sealant line, never occured to me that it was unusual. Mine looks fine as its ROSSO with the black accents. I don't know what to think now,
but mine sure looks original.
Ciao,
Luigi

Hi gents!

Mine has it, I'm pretty sure this is original. It's a kind of sealant indeed, if anyone's car has had it (re)sprayed can imagine he paint starting te flake in time.

The cars came from the factory with a small bead of black sealant in that seam. Many people spray over it in a repaint and the paint will usually crack due to the flexing in the area. It's a little hard to tell from the picture, but that bead looks a bit thicker than I am used to seeing.

0985 308 QV

Hello to all,

Thank you all for your input. Sounds like the car did come from the factory with the sealant. I feel much better now. The paint definitely looks original and not a respray, so I wasn't sure what to think when I noticed the sealant.

Since the car is Blue Sera, the bead doesn't stand out very much. In fact, in sunny conditions, it almost looks like a reflection in the paint.

Thanks again,
Andy

Andy,
That color is very elegant on any curvaceous Ferrari, especially yours!

Is the sealant at the base of the C pillar found on both the GTS and GTB ?

B's and S's had it but in the early years the seam was sometimes caulked with a hard substance and painted (those cracked rather badly). I have seen the very earliest of steel cars that had the black rubber or silicone and sometimes you would see the hard material with it painted over from Maranello. It was one of those things that got done differently from one month to the next. I am not sure of the fiberglass cars. If memory serves the seam was left exposed.

I am working on a project that might possibly become a book project that will try to address and come up with answers to these questions. It is focusing on the GT4 through the 328 and all the production variations of the series.

My 1980 GTBi has its original paint there, and has the same black sealant. Not quite as thick as yours, but I imagine a tiny bit of the edges of mine has probably worn away over the past 28 years.
