Had your car in a judging / concours?

Who here has taken their V8 car to judging at a local or regional / national concours?

I have never done it but am considering it this year in Monterrey for the annual FCA meet.

Anything you can share with the experience, what the judges value, etc.

I bought my car to drive often and enjoy outside of the garage but think this would be fun to try for a year since my car will be so close to all original spec.

Thanks. Robb

Robb,

I won second place in the Pocono's but it was really a Lambo event and the judging was very casual. My understanding is condition and originality are the main criteria.

Looks gorgeous.

Bet it was fun. Did the judges give you any suggestions or pointers?

Took a look at what awards are given and the rules for them. Your best chance will be the Ed Gilbertson “Ferraris are Meant to be Driven!” Award. So maybe make it look the car just competed in the 12 hours of Sebring and then took on the Pike's Peak Hillclimb on your way to Cali when upon arrival, you got hit by a mud slide from the recent rains.

That's great Joe. Thanks for a good laugh this morning. I'll check in with my chapter on that.

I'm actually somewhat serious here. A Concours d'Elegance is all about pristine, immaculate and original condition. The only cars that normally show up grungy looking are the cars worth stupid amounts of money from say the 60's and are unrestored. Even then, this is rare. Judges are used to seeing cars pampered for the judging, every single document even on display. To the point that you wonder if the owner kept the original oil filter to boot. Now if there is an award called Ferrari's are meant to be driven, showing up in a dirty Ferrari (OMG! dirt!) might be just the ticket. Some judges will be appalled and others will love you for it. Go to get noticed, not to blend in like the other sheep.

The Ed Gilbertson Award was last given in 2010 BTW. So obviously you need to make a statement in order to get it. Either that or FCA hasn't posted the winners for the past 3 years.

There is always a logic to my insanity.

If you do play around with this idea, 3M sells a spray can product called 90000. It's a spray on clear bra and it's cheap. 1 can should do your entire nose and it costs $30 with a tool to help you. The Cobra crowd is starting to like it. This way your car can look like a dirty slut and you don't have to worry about the paint in really dirty areas.
