MYSTERY PART IN 308 TRANS OIL PAN

Took off the transmission oil pan to replace some seals, and there sitting in the pan was a spring - about an inch long, 3/8 inch diameter - looks like it's designed to work in compression.

Anyone familiar with this trnas know what / where springs are used? There does not seem to be an apparent performance problem.

Picture is available - don't know if I can post it, but would be happy to email it.

Could it be from the clutch plate?

Most likely one of 3 spring+ball inserts along one edge of the gearbox pan. They are the "detent" balls which hold the gear selecters into gear when fully engaged. Without them the gear selection won't "stick" home.

Removing the pan without knowing about them tends to result in the springing out. They are differing lengths, so maybe only 1 came out. There should be a ball on-top as well, so keep looking!

They need to be inserted back into their little homes before reinstalling the pan, and check that they are engaging into the gbox above during reassembly.
