Derek Bell's comment about the Daytona type

Thanks to a scottish friend, today I picked up the latest edition of the Octane magazine which contained racing Driver Derek Bell's thoughts on the competition and the (his/my) street Daytona.

With the permission of David Lillywhite, editorial director of Octane, I'm able to publish the pdf version of it, which he kindly emailed to me. I thought it may be of interest to other "old dinosaurs" like myself.

Great article. Am I correct in understanding that Derek drove your Daytona? Sweet!

I met Derek at a motoring event a few years ago (AT SPEED MOTORSPORTS). He signed my book that featured his career. He also signed CreamPuff's breasts (long story, don't ask).

He's such a great guy, one of the best drivers (and he's also very modest).

Derek was the first owner in 1972 of my Daytona and ordered it new thru Garage Francorchamp in Belgium. The car was delivered from the factory on May 12th. 1972. As Le Mans was in June 1972 (if I'm correct) driving his personal Daytona back from Le Mans to London after the 24 hour race (as he writes) was probably one of the first longer outings of my Daytona..41 years ago.

Just wonderful!!

Contemporary art is special, particularly when you get personal with it like in this case.

212, you can officially proclaim that you are fondling with Bell's ex on a regular basis. In fact, she's your bitch!

Salve,

The good news: I'm the pilot

212- Great article, thanks. Can relate to going too fast and not noticing in the Daytona. Driving mine home from Houston, TX to Clovis, NM when I first got her, I would look down and see 160 or 170 kph (Euro) without realizing it. Not quite like Derek's 160 mph, but then he is a bit more qualified than I am.

Just to be clear, Derek is of course talking about a Competizione version of the Daytona, not the road version. It is chassis #15373 he is talking about. But, 212export, it was also yellow! Would be a nice matching set in your garage!

Unfortunately I am pretty sure that Nick Mason won't sell it.

Thanks for posting the column, I love reading Derek's recollections of an amazing life.

Is he not talking about both? . . . Racing at LM and then jumping in his road car after the race.

Dear Onno

If you re-read the article patiently, then you realize that Derek is talking about both cars as explained at the beginning of the thread.
I'm sure, Nike Mason would not sell it (why should he) however even if he would, it would be way, way out of my reach....!

I appreciate it very much, Onno. I have a 1:18 model of this "Ferraud" car in yellow in front of me in the Office....at least that....! Alain de Cadenet drove it in his DVD classic "Ferrari", where he presents the different Ferrari types over a timespan of almost 50 years.

Highly recommend this whole set. any real car guy should have it and study it. I can't tell you how many times I have seen it and it never gets old. While I am posting gratuitous pics of my self with racers, you may recognize this guy. One of my all time heroes. (damn, i look kinda rough at Pebble too.) Think I got about 4 hrs the night before. He, on the other hand was quite diminutive. And the sharpest dresser there. Which is saying something in that crowd.
