Henry Ford II Ferrari barchetta

The Henry Ford II Touring Barchetta was delivered new to Henry Ford in 1952 and was equipped with some very special features, the most important of which was the factory installed 225 2.7 litre engine, which usually powered Ferrari's customer racers. The exterior was 'Americanized' with white wall tires and exhausts mounted in the rear fender. Ford's designers supposedly used it as one of the inspiration sources for the Thunderbird of 1955.

it was purchased by the Petersen Automotive Museum early in 2005. What I want to know is : did Henry Ford II actually pay for it, or was it a gift from Enzo, maybe finagling a way to get Ford to make parts for him if he ever needed them? It's hard to believe he would give it away when at that time he was probably only making 100 or so cars a year. Has Henry Ford II ever been quoted on his memories of the car? Was that his first Ferrari? I think his grandson, Edsel, had a odern Ferrari 400 for awhile after he sold his restored Ford GT40.

I've never known Enzo to give anything away for free, let alone a much needed revenue from a car sale.

It would be funny in the end since Enzo 'screwed' Ford out of that 'deal' in the 60's not to mention the F40 issue.

So, I'm sure Ford not only could afford it but most likely did and therefore got the bug to buy Ferrari [Spa] later.
