Default Free SCUD/16M Exhaust Modification

Ok this is not entirely free as it involves some of your time and about GBP 2 of parts but at least I have now got your attention;

When the exhaust has cooled down

So SCUD/16M owners remove the 2 small grills in your rear bumper/fender above the diffuser

There you will find the 2 exhaust valves which look like Pic1

The parts you need are 2 M8 Sleeves Pics 2 & 3 which I could find in either 20mm or 30mm but buy either as they need to be cut down to 15mm length

Then follow the following steps;

1. On each exhaust value, remove the circlip at the base, suggest you have a magnetic retrieval tool in case in jumps into the diffuser

2. Loosen the 10mm retaining nut

3. Carefully lever off the base of the exhaust value actuator with a screwdriver (where the circlip was) and unscrew this

4. Remove the 10 mm nut

5. Slip the 15mm M8 sleeve on top of the 10 mm nut on the exhaust valve actuator base

6. Reinstall the 10 mm nut

7. Rescrew the base of the exhaust value actuator until it fits into the slot hole which drives the exhaust value (this is in fully open position)

8. Tighten down the 10mm nut to the exhaust value actuator base

9. Replace the circlip

10. Repeat for the other side

11. Go for a test drive

In a nut shell this allows the exhaust value to not fully close but is a very good balance between adding some tone and it not sounding like a tractor with the valves open, trust me 15mm is the sweet spot, I spent about 4 hours on this today

I am aware that the exhaust valve shown is from a 430 but its just the same on a SCUD & the reason this works better on a SCUD than a F430 which already sounds good with valve closed, is that on a F430 there are 2 tail pipes vs. on a SCUD/16M where there is only 1

Spacers down another 3mm today to 12mm and that's where they will stay, why this simple mod is so significant in that not only do you get a better overall sound mix, critically the exhaust valves fully open much more quickly when you press the throttle as they are not fully closed in the first place.

Wow! Wonder how it'd sound on the Capristo Scud system.

Yes really poor design from Ferrari. Lamborghini with their LP Gallardo's do a much better job in that department. Downshifts on a Scud with the stock valve config. are not impressive.

Off you go chaps, won't take you long, lets have some feedback pls...I will be genuinely surprised if you think its crap

If you loose the spring circlips in the diffuser buy a cheap magnetic recovery tool or buy an E-Clip set from e-bay

I have the bypass switch on the dash and your still brand new remote

It's open 99.99% of the time.

Took the 16M to a car show lots of Ferrari's etc - Scud 16M was a blast!

Parked next to a Stradale that was previously owned by Axl Rose and took no pictures

Found some in another thread - Richard believe he recently retired.

What the heck is that guy doing on his knees - he must really like the CF shields.

Whatever happened to Axel Rose, I guess those guys just decided they had enough dough, The Rolling Stones (age 70) did a concert in Zurich at the weekend which netted them 6 Bucks. Anyway this mod is meant for SCUD/16M owners with an OEM exhaust without the capristo valve override, enjoy...

Well Richard I don't know what happened to Axel Rose but I finally got around to doing your mod.

My sleeves are 15mm and they work great. Is the benefit of having them at 12mm is to open the valves a little later? I have had my valves plugged for the past year. Your mod is definitely better as the 16M doesn't sound like a tractor when it is crawling past my neighbour's houses.

Another minuscule change I also made. I've swapped the little hex screw bolts that hold the rear mesh panels with phillips head ones. Over the years I've had them seize and the hex's stripping three times. This necessitated the painful process of having to drill them and use an extractor to finally get these little guys out. Now a simple screw driver removes even the tightest ones easily.

Thanks for the mod.

David.

It's a very good idea David to change the hex screws. I replace pretty much all of them especially those of the engine bay panels where they seize particularly easily. These hex heads are very fragile and it's well too easy to strip them.

In fact David, I'm back to 15mm sleeves and have also changed my M4 hex key screws for M4 cross head screws

Thanks once again Richard. I love this mod. I was never satisfied with the valves being fully open at low revs. This simple mod has allowed me to be satisfied with the car. I know others rightfully recommend Capristo and Fabspeed options but I prefer to keep the car stock as long as I can.

David.
